Critics say that the tone and brevity of Obama's remarks on Fort Hood 'did not appreciate the gravity of what he represents' while others say he had the right presidential instincts.
As the U.S. military and law enforcement were scrambling to save lives after a deadly shooting rampage at Ft. Hood, Texas, President Obama opened his remarks Thursday with a two-minute "shout out" to audience members who attended the Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Interior Department.
Obama's initial comments on the shooting that killed 13 and wounded scores of others came at the conclusion of Thursday's conference, which was attended by leaders from several of the 564 federally recognized American Indian tribes.
"I planned to make some broader remarks," he told the crowd. "But as some of you might have heard there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas."
The president's words on the deadly rampage came two minutes after he gave a "shout out" to an audience member and stressed the need to pass health care reform.
"I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. Its good to see you," he said.

He’ll probably send B.O.B.
No reason to jump to conclusions though. /s (barf)
the man has NO CLUE how to lead a country. NONE.
Beckel always reminds me of the guy who’s always ‘belly-up’ to the bar at the local country club...after he’s told his wife he’s going to play a ‘few holes’...and she could care less. No one talks to him because he becomes belligerent. Then goes home smashed day after day. Always pissed off at life....and nothing satisfies him. Sad, really.
Well, what could possibly be more important than his pet legislation? What a commander in chief! Let’s not put in an appearance and show respect and sympathy. He’d have to get his nose out of that rarified air it occupies. We all know what George Bush would do.
Who knows how much information he had about the Ft. Hood massacre at that point. I’m not all that interested in how he handled the unexpected need to make some comment on it. What I will be *very* interested in is what ACTIONS he takes to get to the root of how this happened, and prevent a repeat. We’re seeing a growing list of credible reports that this guy was a walking encyclopedia of warning signs, and that quite a few military officials were aware of this. Either some heads need to roll, or some formal policies and regulations that prevented officials from taking effective actions need urgent revision.
Oh well, we don’t really want him in Texas anyway, do we?
With the limited information we have at this point, it appears to me that his motive was probably more to avoid getting sent to Iraq or Afghanistan where he might get killed, and less to take a martyr's shortcut to Paradise. At any rate, for the foreseeable future, he faces life in the safety of a military brig, with 3 square meals a day, heating and air conditioning, medical care, lawyers to help him craft his insanity defense, etc, all on the taxpayers' dime. Fortunately for civilization, military processes leading to the death penalty are quickly than civilian processes, but I don't think they're all that quick. He'll be safe for quite some time to come.
I know what he did do. He flew into Baghdad to have Thanksgiving, no, to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the troops when things were still quite hot there. Barry 0bozo will be on his Asian Tour for his first Thanksgiving in office.
You sure don’t.
Btw, sending you FR mail.
ZeroBama just don’ care about white (or OD) folks......
At the least, I see some class action lawsuits against the Pentagon coming from military families.
Limited to what? His telling other officers that Muslims in Iraq should rise up and kill the aggressor? (Americans) That he blogged about how suicide bombers are like a soldier who falls on a grenade? That he yelled "Allahu Akhbar" while shooting 43 U.S. soldiers? That he wrote "Allah" on his front door and gave away Korans before he went to kill? That he was in a convenience store in full Muslim garb yesterday morning and told the Muslim store owner he didn't go to Mosque enough? That his former Muslim cleric in DC said he went to Mosque every day? That a former colleague and officer said he proselytized his patients to Islam?
You always find a way to defend anti-conservative ideas and sound like a complete idiot, GS, but I think you've outdone yourself this time.
“I planned to make some broader remarks,” he told the crowd. “But as some of you might have heard there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.”
Hearing the above-mentioned in a soundbite made me realize I will not be comforted if he has to talk to the American people. I’m liking him as President a lot less than I expected, and I wasn’t expecting much.
What a difference a year makes. If George Bush were still in office and had not jumped on to Air Force One within 10 minutes of becoming aware of the situation the press would have spent these last 2 days reporting about how George Bush did not react in time and did not really care about the troops.
Sh_t on a stick?
Right, Allah Akhbar means 'I'm Amish and a pacifist". Your statement rivals the FBI saying that they ruled out terrorism before they knew what the hell happened.
Well now we know.
I just sent Sheppie an email...he’s insulting the military community/victims families...it is TERRORISM. What the heck did Hasan have to be stressed about? Never been to war, wasn’t leaving a wife and kids behind...what a POSWUSS.
He handed out Korans...it is obvious to all of us it was not stress. PLUS Hasan would have been in a cushy hut in a an A/C office. BOR is sorta hitting the nail on the head.
