uthorities say Fort Hood shooting Nidal Malik Hasan remains in a coma but is expected to live.

A federal law enforcement official said investigators have not been able to talk to Hasan since the deadly rampage that left 13 people dead and injured 30 others at the sprawling Army post in Texas on Thursday.

The initial investigation shows that Hasan allegedly used only one gun during the attack -- a 5.7-caliber semiautomatic pistol.

Don’t need to.
My buddy has one and I’ve put about 200 rounds through it.

Ammo is very expensive.
Not something you can find and reloading components are rare to nonexistent.

.22 caliber is similar to our 5.56mm NATO cartridge.
The 5.7 is a hair larger in diameter, but has a lighter bullet and a much smaller cartridge.

If you have ever been to a military medical facility, you would know people are packed in pretty tight. Usually rows of chairs faceing the same direction several rows deep. In that close of a group it would be easy for a round to pass through several people.

Those are Barnes TTSX bullets. Polymer tipped, triple core. Good penetration and expansion.

I shoot them in my .458 SOCOM.

Sure looks like a lot of premeditation. Even to selecting a round capable of multiple wounding when fired into a packed mass of troops, and also defeating the kevlar vests of the first responding MPs/LEOs.

I wonder what round he used (probably never find out, unless Mas Ayoob writes about it), the civilian ones are loaded with Hornady V-Max bullets, better known for their terminal performance on varmints than people. He might have gottten his hands on the LEO or Mil rounds more geared for penetration.

Either way, given the observation by the FReeper you mentioned, this wasn’t “sudden jihad” it was coldly premeditated.

Federal Property, military (UCMJ) or federal crime.
If he dies, it will probably be here in Indiana (Terra Haute).
We got to squish-out McVeigh.

Those Barnes bullets, it should be noted, are just what was in the picture somebody snagged off the internet to show the type of pistol.

We have no idea if he was using AP ammo or what.

I hope we learn about the bullet type in due course.

Anyway you look at it, this was deliberated and coldly premeditated. Even down to giving away Korans on D-day.

5.7 mm, it’s about the size of a .22 in diameter.

I’ve spent what seems like YEARS waiting in line at Army hospitals for various tests and innoculations.

Still, one round hitting multiple targets is rare.

Sure, they were all lined up, but we just don’t know yet.

I thought they looked similar to Nosler “Ballistic Tips”, but I didn’t know Barnes made 5.7mm bullets.

Neat.

Pancho Villa used to test new rifles and pistols on prisoners, where they were lined up tightly, chest to back.

He shot the man if front, and judged a bullet/rifle/pistol by the number of men it killed or wounded.
