I'm willing to bet that Sergeant Munley, a Department of Defense civilian law enforcement officer, was carrying a 9mm loaded with military ball ammunition. Ball ammo has great penetrating power but little stopping power.

This is what I have heard and why I'm planning to add something like a .357 to my own 9. I'm not sure how this is being an armchair quarterback; the observation that 9s may not stop a perp was not intended as a criticism of the brave policewoman.

Perhaps you took offense at something I wrote regarding some of the wildly speculative statements of others. Certainly, "upgrading" to .357 magnum from 9mm is an option that has nothing to do with arm-chair quarterbacking. The folks I take issue with are those who seemed to reach conclusions based on what they heard without realizing that what they heard from the news media was speculative and outright untrue. On top of that, some reached conclusions on totally erronious assumptions about the way the military operates. People didn't know that soldiers on their home bases are not routinely armed. People assumed that no-on tried to wrestle hasan to the ground. I haven't heard whether any did, or not, but to speculate is just plain wrong.

As it turns out, Hasam was armed with a very small caliber handgun but with a very high capacity magazine. It is also reported, though I don't know if correctly, that he practiced with handguns quite a bit. So much for those who said a doctor wouldn't likely be proficient (my words, not theirs). So, take what I said with the fact in mind that I was addressing outlandish statements by a few. If the shoe fits, sobeit, but if not; no offense intended.
