I hope you came to appreciate the great opportunities that came from your unusual family situation. I can only imagine how tough it must have been. But only you know how to handle it.

I grew up in a family in which a member (my grandmother) had progressive alzheimer's. Like most kids, I just dealt with it. But as an adult, I see the incredible insights it gave me. It was monstrous at the time, but I began early on to notice that it gave me an edge in understanding human behavior and gave me a mature compassion for those who suffer and survive the slings and arrows of life...and it made me more mature than my friends who didn't have such an experience.

I am currently taking care of my 90+ y/o parents (as soon as I get a grip on the status quo, the situation changes...the challenges increase daily)

God bless you. I know it must have been tough growing up in a mixed race household (but I do believe that the mixing of genes makes for a better, stronger person).

Just remember that old saying..."that which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger".

God bless you and give you strength.

Wow, what an increibly thoughtful post. It's a perfect example of how accepting my fellow FReepers have been compared to those on the left who have taken every opportunity to condemn my decisions. Thank you.

Life has not been a bed of roses but there is much I would not change. In fact, I went one further and entered into a mixed-race marriage myself. It's certainly a whole lot different for me and my wife but we still, on occaision, encounter individuals whose opinion, regardless how irrelevent, is made well known. I have an enormous amount of respect for my parents knowing what it was like for them.

And I know what an incredible amount of love, hard work and dedication it takes to care for your parents; I commend you. I've been there. They must have been great parents to raise a child on whom they can rely. It truely is a testament to their parenting skills. Good luck with that and may you enjoy your folks for many years to come.

Thank you again. :-)
