Fort Hood shooting suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, wanted out of the Army after being constantly harassed by others in the military and was called a "camel jockey," his family said.
As Hasan was about to be deployed to Iraq, he was suffering from some of the same stresses that he was trained as an Army psychiatrist to treat.
Although the 39-year-old had just been promoted to major in May, his family says he had hired a lawyer to help him get out of the Armed Forces.
"Apparently became very disgruntled in the mission in Iraq and Afghanistan and voiced that to a lot of his colleagues," said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX).
He also voiced it to the world in an Internet posting, where he compared suicide bombers to GI's who save their colleagues by throwing themselves on a grenade.
"Just keep in mind mass killers pretty much know they want to die and they tend to take as many people with them as they can in a shooting," said former FBI agent and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett, who also believes Hasan didn't want to survive the Ft. Hood shooting.
"It is one of those things where he went and wanted to kill a lot of people and commit suicide maybe in his own mind that he's saving peoples' lives," said Garrett. "As illogical as that sounds, in his mind, that would be quite logical."
Hasan is an American citizen of Palestinian descent and after the 9/11 attacks, his cousin says he was the target of constant harassment from others in the military. His tormentors called him a "camel jockey," said his cousin, Nader Hasan. He wanted out of the Army, so he paid back his military student loans and hired an attorney.

Call him Ash.
“He was disciplined for preaching Islam to his patients.
That is why he was upset.”
Funny how they get upset when they can’t do it, but insist that no one else do it of any other religion. Separation of church and state ya know. Works both ways.
Hang him high.
Sorry, the BS detector is going off in my head.
And LOUDLY.
If he heard it from anyone, he would have heard it from muslim enlisted men relating something they heard, but even that, I doubt. An officer in the Medical Corps making such comments to him? Nope. And no way an enlisted man is going to talk like that to an officer. At least, not to his face.
So Hasan comes from a family of dishonorable people. They do not condemn this cowardly act as that of a black sheep in the family, something hateful. Instead, they try to justify it by slandering the honorable people who put on the uniform of our country and risk their lives to protect us, even them.
Actually, carrot tops are green—LOL! My dad taught me to say that when anyone called me carrot top-——
Given that, even though he was born here, the family identified themselves as "Palestinian" (technically, there's no such animal, but that's an argument for another day), it's far more likely that his parents taught him that "sticks and stones" were beating Israeli children - but only until he was big enough to handle a gun or a bomb.
At any rate, the media is chock full of lies and inaccuracies on this one. Expect more.
He was a "recent convert to Islam" until his brother told them he was a "lifelong devout Muslim" - OOPS.
Then he was dead, now he's alive, but paralyzed - OOPS (although the poetic justice of being paralyzed by a female Infidel is way too delicious an irony to pass up. I so hope it turns out that she's Jewish. They could keep him alive alive just to tell him that every half hour for the next thirty years and I'd rest at ease).
His Facebook page has already been pulled - HMMMM.
He was "already under federal investigation" - OOPS squared (can you say "Foreseeable Negligence", in court about 42 times???).
On and on..... Bottom line - he was scum, he is scum, and he'll die scum. But it all points to the larger problem of getting a handle on all of this radical Muslim bullshit in this country. Wait until all those "prison Muslims" get spun up. No more tolerance. No more caring about their far too easily bruised feelings. None whatsoever. FU*K 'em all.
I’m now warning libs: you can call me a Nazi, a redneck, or anything you like, except teabagger. I’ll go postal on you for that slur.
It does reveal a LOT about them doesn’t it?
I wonder if the word ‘degenerate’ is now listed as an archaic usage in the dictionary, if it remains there at all.
oops
I never heard the term.
Texas protestant, 38, male, single (ugly too)
I’m also part of that exclusive club. In addition, I have the rarest blood type!
My nickname as a child was Carrot. I married a man whose childhood nickname was Tater, LOL!
re: called camel jockey.
I have been called cracker, and so far havent felt an impulse to wreak mayhem on my fellow human beings.
I prefer to be called a “peckerwood”, but I am a rather old school, paleoconservative.
Where are all the headlines repeating this below - clip?
Little Sheppie Smith, after hours of spewing the poor little picked on Major, didn't like what Co. Lee was saying -THIS is the clip that be playing non-stop.
My son was “Nurse Betty” (RN and medic) all through basic and AIT. Once he was deployed he was “Doc” unless it was someone who he had been in training with - he was still “Nurse Betty”. His father was “Redman” for his American Indian heritage - with all the jokes that go with that - including replacing his weapon with a bow and arrow. It guys doing their guy measuring thing.
As careful as the Army is about racial slurs I have a hard time believing that Hasan was referred to as a “camel jockey” in the work environment.
yup.
Overweight, ugly, poor (because if I were rich I’d likely have several “wives”), toes look funny too.
