Probably just another example of “sudden Jihad syndrome,” or, “when moderate muslims turn rabid.”

I'd bet on it. And all the more reason to purge them form the military, for you can never be reasonably sure that they won't experience "sudden jihad syndrome" since it is by definition unpredictable. Logically the threat, once detected, must be eliminated. Sort of like cutting out a benign cancer, rather than observing it and hoping it doesn't metastasize.

A goofy thing about SJS (Sudden Jihad Syndrome) is that even "fallen" Muslims who have been drinking and whoring for years can fall to it. It happens when they meet the right immam, who puts the fear of allah back in him, and suggests that only by waging jihad and becoming a "martyr" (sic) can he cleanse his soul and enter paradise.
