FWIW, in the 70’s, when I was in, you were only armed by the distribution from the arms room, which, if the M16 reports are true, means at least two are involved.
Ammo is, of course, available on the civilian market, as are magazines. If you can get the weapon, feeding it isn’t a problem. (Note: my semi AR’s eat well...)
It is to be remembered, though, since most have never served, that the military is normally disarmed, although in better physical condition than your normal civilian, including me. You only get your rifle for practice, or if they’ve a target in mind: you aren’t on you own, ever.
