How does some dude like this get to be a mental health professional in the military? Was he a medical doctor, perchance? One of the reports I've seen said that he was a psychiatrist, which would indicate that he's an M.D... which also explains why he was a Major. It could well be that he hasn't even been in the Army very long if he joined up after medical school. I don't think Doctors start out at the bottom of the O-ranks... maybe some military doctor can calibrate me on that.

Thank you VERY much, this is just so mind boggling. Did you hear that, although they released those 2 other detained soldiers, that they are still looking for someone else? (IF reports can be trusted.)

You are correct ... most MDs come in as an O-3 (Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps Captain; Lieutenant senior grade in the Navy). I believe some MDs with unique skills come in at a higher pay grade.
