As JJ noted, your point is well-stated and perfectly plausible, especially if you factor in that the (demoted, fired) creator Scott Peters stated explicitly way back when planning began on the show that his aim was to remain true to the spirit of the original series.
However, there is a larger issue here - the ABC network's comical, but also curiously suspicious reaction(over-reaction /g) and actions towards the show. To halt production and replace the creator who produced what turned out to be a top-rated network premier even before it aired, and order the series "retooled" and start playing fast and loose with the scheduling, well, that should cause all but the most determinedly "incurious" people to wonder... /g
