Lindsey Graham warns GOP against going too far right [defends Fiorina, attacks DeMint, Hoffman]

The morning after Republicans lost an upstate New York House seat, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned that conservative activists will bring destruction to the Republican Party if they drive out moderate candidates across the country.

“To those people who are pursuing purity, you’ll become a club not a party,” Graham told POLITICO in the Capitol Wednesday. “Those people who are trying to embrace conservatism in a thoughtful way that fits the region and the state and the district are going to do well. Conservativism is an asset. Blind ideology is not.”

Graham, who has sparred with his party’s right wing on issues ranging from climate change to Guantanamo Bay to Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court nomination, warned that those concerned about the state of the GOP should help find candidates who are electable — not ones who adhere to a particular type of ideology. And he said that both the GOP nominee, Dede Scozzafava and the conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman were both out of the mainstream of the upstate New York district – which lead to the victory of Democrat Bill Owens Tuesday night.

First, we have to bring up the recall in the next session.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina: Senator Mike Rose is backing an effort to have the state of South Carolina allow for citizens to recall government officials at any and all levels. With the potential impeachment of Governor Mark Sanford, Rose has picked the prime time to bring the issue to the attention of the state. Rose is also backing an idea that would allow for initiative and referendum on the state level. Currently, South Carolina does not allow this process.

A nobody senator who lucked out by getting face time on the Whitewater committee, then later became John McCain’s valet, wants to lecture us on how to run our political affairs.

I, for one, am not buying.

They’ve obviously got no one because they just re-elected him last year. Haven’t heard a word from his buddy McCain. Maybe that is because he’s up for re-election in 2010.

All you people in Arizona, a vote for McCain means this same kind of stuff from him after the election in 2010. So get him out now.

Pansy Graham leader of the DIABLO pack needs to shut up right now.

"Conservativism is an asset. Blind ideology is not.”

And blind stupidity and self-importance with unlimited media access is a danger to all concerned.

I just know Lindsey is doing the undermining and backstabbing for Juan now so Juan can lay low and pretend he's actually a loyal Republican since he's up for re-election in 2010.

Yeah, uh-huh. Thanks for the concern Linds. Always nice to be offered advice from someone who knows nothing of conservatism. But I think we’ll go our own way here. LOL

Lindsey will be pissing us off until 2014. SC has not recall mechanism or he'd already be gone. Lindsey, you are truly a queer POS!

Huh? Scozzafava looked like Owens and took votes away from Hoffman. Hoffman would have won otherwise. Hoffman lost by 3%. I can't believe he said that.

It does appear that the RNC/GOP do aim to lose! Lindsey Grahamnesty is sure doing a good imitation of a democrat lately (and always). I read tonight he is part of a gang of 3 that is figuring out a way to pass Cap and Tax! He also has just warned that Republicans should not kick moderates out in favor of conservatives or the GOP will just become a small “club”. I read he was just re-elected and will be up to his usual tricks for many years to come before he’s up again for re-election.

Graham and Politico are a perfect fit. Politico is a liberal Democrat outfit. Why is Graham wasting his time speaking to them? He should be talking to the millions of Americans, Republicans included, who are fed up. If Graham thinks his political future depends on Politico, he is mistaken.
