Ursus arctos is the brown bear. The word arctos is from the Greek for bear. Ursus arctos is "bear bear". The northern climes are called the Arctic because they lie under the constellation Ursus Major, the great bear. (Hence Antarctic, opposite the bear). The polar bear is Ursus maritimus, the "sea bear"

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi = Bear berry.
