Election Results Show A Mixed Night For The Christian Right
US News & World Report ^ | 11/4/09 | Dan Gilgoff

Yes, socially conservative Republican candidates prevailed last night in the big races—the gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey—but it was the special election for New York's 23rd Congressional District that had become a national symbol for the battle between religious conservatives and the GOP establishment. In recent days, it was the race that the big Christian right groups like the Family Research Council and Susan B. Anthony List and the movement's favored politician, Sarah Palin, had become most outspoken about.

But after forcing the socially liberal Republican out of the race, the right's candidate, Doug Hoffman of the Conservative Party, lost yesterday to Democrat Bill Owens. It's the first time a Democrat has won the district's seat in more than 100 years. After having made the race a national emblem, the right—including the Christian right—have to face the national implications of its loss there. Even in a ruby red district, the aggressively conservative Hoffman brand failed.

In Virginia and New Jersey, by contrast, the winning Republican candidates made a point of downplaying their social conservatism....

These idiots do not understand politics or the voters.

For instance, on the abortion issue, the prolife view is ALWAYS and advantage for the prolife candidate!

This is true in every race!

YES, every single race in the country!

What the idiots do not understand is an advantage is NOT a guarantee!

Only about 20% to 25% of population votes “single issue” on abortion.

If that number is 20%, a rough guess would be that 13 points would be “prolife” and 7 points would be “pro-choice” giving the prolife candidate a 5 point advantage on that issue -—

HOWEVER, 80% of the population does NOT vote “single issue” so our candidates MUST be well versed on other issues as well!

Again, the prolife endorsement is ALWAYS an advantage, it simply is not the only issue out there!

(Somebody needs to explain this to Neil Bortz, as well! I do not expect to change his mind on the issue, but if you enjoy politics, you need to understand the “pro-life increment” or the advantage of the prolife vote!

NY 23 was a win. Dede is gone. Owens will be gone in a year if a Conservative is nominated.

They must be getting dizzy with all the spin going on here. A no-name third party candidate forced the DIABLO Repub out of the race and nearly knocked off the Democrat. That’s a huge story.

Not to mention, for the 31st consecutive time, the people of a state said no to redefining marriage. 31-0. In football, that’s a blowout, in baseball, the game would have long ago been called under the mercy rule, but in politics, where a loud and bitter minority fancy themselves as the officials, that’s yet another thing that proves just how hateful and divisive the rest of us are.

CNN’s spin this morning was that this was a repudiation of Sarah Palin. These people live on another planet.

Only a moron (or steve-b) could honestly believe (or even try to pretend) that the race had ANYTHING to do with the “Christian right”...
That’s just sad.

If the articles intent is to imply that downplaying social conservatism is the key to victory and why McDonnell and others won, the article is incorrect in its assesment.

Hoffman\an lost because of the following reasons:

1.) He entered the race late.

2.) Compared to Owens, Hoffman had zero name recognition.

3.) Newt's endorsement of Scuzzafava undermined Hoffman. Maybe just a little, but it still hurt in the end.

4.) Hoffman was outspent by Owens and Scuzzafava.

5.) Hoffman was fighting a three-front war: Owens, Scuzzafava AND the RINO establishment in NY.

6.) Hoffman did not have as much political expertise in running as effective a campaign as did Owens.

7.) Scuzzafava had hard-core supporters who cast a revenge-based vote against Hoffman. That is why she got 5% and why others went over and voted for Owens.

A year from now, Hoffman will be ready. In the meantime, people need to rally around Hoffman. The RINO establishment undoubtedly is not be happy that THEIR candidate was forced to withdraw from the race or face the embarrassment of placing third while not being withdrawn from the race. Undoubtedly the RINO establishment will seek to undermine Hoffman's chances in 2010 on the Republican ticket or any ticket at all.

I wonder if the RINO establishment in NY directed Scuzzafava to endorse Owens?

OWens is more socially conservative than the Republican was. We defeated the Republican, so it’s a win for us.

Three cheers for Doug Hoffman! Mr. Hoffman saw a need and stepped up to help save his country from socialism. He may not be going to Washington with this vote, but he — and we — are winners. Doug Hoffman, with no political experience and powerful, focused enemies, volunteered to run for public office and did very well. His is a real “profile in courage.” Here’s to you, Doug!!!

Additional CNN spin:

Not about Obama
Low turnout
Liberals not energized(Obama not being liberal enough)
Only LOCAL politics

My favorite is the WH talking point referenced several times. “A Democrat hasn’t been elected in NY-23 in over 100 years.”

NY 23 was ruby red? After being ruled by RINO’s since 1996? So what really happened is a clear conservative got 45% of the vote in a distinctly purple district because the RINO got outed. That’s impressive. And likely if he had the benefit of more than a month of visibility he might well have taken it. The “visibility” issue must be owned by the RNC, whose game-playing sans principles led to this mess in the first place.

And yes, it would have helped a lot if Hoffman were a bit more charismatic. There are other third party candidates with a little more spice in their recipe.

And that is why the left in both major parties would be well-advised to keep looking over their shoulder. This is but the opening volley. We will not rest, we will not lose focus, we will not relent, because we know our cause is just and our duty is clear. And in the moment of their complacency we will find the moment of our opportunity. To borrow the words of Churchill, this is the time to “Charge the barricades” set up by those who would separate us from our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms:

A day may come when the courage of men fails,
when we forsake our friends
and break all bonds of fellowship,

but it is not this day.
An hour of wolves and shattered shields,
when the age of men comes crashing down,
but it is not this day!

This day we fight!!
By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,
I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!
