It's understandable that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, having given up on his gubernatorial ambitions, might want to take time to lick wounds, lie low and, as my colleague C.W. Nevius suggests, do some reflecting.
Unfortunately, there's important and immediate mayoral business to attend to. When Newsom's press secretary, Nathan Ballard, told The Chronicle that Newsom will be back "soon," one hoped he meant this morning.
That's when Newsom was scheduled to speak to 6,000 land-use professionals, architects, planners, real estate developers and other urban experts from all over the world at the opening of the Urban Land Institute conference at Moscone Center.
With its focus on sustainable development, workforce housing and smart growth, the conference speaks directly to Newsom's policy sweet spots. And the fact the conference is being held here is something of a compliment to San Francisco.
But no. "The mayor will not be appearing," Ballard e-mailed me Tuesday afternoon. As Matier & Ross report today, Newsom chose to "unexpectedly" fly off to Hawaii to join his wife and recently born daughter on vacation.
Which means he won't be making an appearance at Thursday's all-day session on urban development in China put on by ChinaSF, the city agency with an office in Shanghai that Newsom himself launched a year ago as part of his outreach to Asian business. Nor at ChinaSF's pavilion at Moscone Center. (Conference details at www.urbanlandexpo.org.)
"Newsom needs to show up at these key national conferences," said Jim Lazarus, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce's senior VP for public policy. "Marketing the city is one of his major jobs."
Assuming he's back from vacation in two weeks, there's a Vietnamese trade mission, headed by the country's deputy prime minister, due in town then, bringing news of business and high-tech opportunities in that fast-growing economy.

Blowing off?
I could have gone all day without seeing that ‘head’line...
Maybe those in private industry should listen less to government and not care the mayor isn’t telling them how to do their job.
Yes, ANY use of terms like “blowing,” “sucking,” etc. should never be allowed in any story cumming out of Pelosiland.
Hmmm....I don’t think San Francisco and “blowing” should ever be used in the same sentence.
Do we have a bunch of irresponsible whiny babies in government? Yes.
The man is tired. He deserves a rest.
So y'all quit being racists!
“{San Francisco Mayor, Gavin “Any Twosome”} Newsom blowing off some business meetings”
Entire meetings?
Is this the "wife" he cheated on his previous "wife" with?
