So, how are nations handcuffed to the construct? I’m speaking from ignorance on this, but if you could help me understand why it would be difficult for nations to withdraw, I would appreciate it. What kind of penalties would they incur? Would there be economic sanctions?

well “official” (this is even written down in the treaty) every nation is free to leave the EU when ever they want.
so much for the official part ;-)
now the “real life” situation.
Let´s take Italy for example and imagine they would withdraw from the EU tomorow.
What would happen. first Italy (has the euro as currency)
would not be allowed to use it any longer. so how do they cash from tomorow because their old currency the lira ceased to exist in the year 2000. next thing what would happen Italy would instantly loose any free trade agreements, border agreements... just everything they had negotiated in the last lets say 20 years. so they would have to renegotiate every little detail with the EU again (btw. good luck getting a fair deal from them when you gave the same people yesterday the finger. because they may be a “little” pi$$ed.) so expect an EU trade embargo, penal taxes for your exports... just everything they are able to do to punish a single state who is not member of the EU if they want. (at least it would be a warnig for others not to follow). Then people of Italy would loose their EU citizenship (would mean every Italian who lives and works in an other EU country would loose this right and would be send home). expect some really pissed Italians heading home (just imagine you may have just bought a house in spain and then they say you are no longer allowed to live there :-).
and i could go on and on... So yeah it´s still possible to leave but it would definitely total ruin this country for the next 20 years.
greetings

Well, based on the behavior of other religions, perhaps we should be offended and start chopping of a few heads. Maybe then they’d back of Christianity as a doormat.
