I am not convinced that the NY loss means that much....”

The NY23 loss was not exactly great news. I am not going to pretend I am happy about it. But I am still pleased we stopped Scozzafava, who would have been a nightmare for Republicans and conservatives in the US congress.
Why did Hoffman lose when the last 2 polls had him ahead?
I think its because the the last 2 polls were conducted before the effects of Scozzafa endorsing Owens were fully felt. I wasn't convinced her endorsement of Owens was going to count for much, but apparently she had quite a few core supporters from her own hometown locales, who listened to her and switched their votes to the Democrat Owen.
More reason for the RNC to be ashamed of themselves for wasting one million dollars on this woman.

From the artcle:

The biggest defeat for RINOs in New York wasn’t the pre-election collapse of Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd CD. It was tonight’s stunning victory by conservative Republican Rob Astorino in the race for County Executive of Westchester County—the affluent and heavily taxed suburb just north of NYC, which has been solidly Democratic for more than a decade.

In addition the absentee ballots cast for Scozzafava before she withdrew. Likely many of those would have gone to Hoffman.
