Pelosi will be elected Speaker this January regardless of the outcome of NY23. And Pelosi won't get any additional support from Owens on other matters that she wouldn't have gotten from Scozzafava—with the possible exception of gun control legislation (for which the radical leftists don't have sufficient votes to do much, in any case.)

If Scozzafava had won, it would have been worse than having the Democrat win. In the New York State assembly, she consistently voted to the left of most Democrats, and would have done exactly the same in the US congress.
It's better for a Democrat to vote with Pelosi, than for a nominal Republican like Scozzafava to vote with the Democrats and Pelosi. This way, the Democrats can't get any Republican cover for their insane policies.

Pelosi would have had another vote with Scozzafava anyways so it doesn't make any difference.
The point is, this guy is there for a year, and after that, he stands a pretty good chance of losing in his reelection bid. I'd much rather have that, than have Scozzafava, who could be keeping the seat for ages, like Arlene Specter has, and keep voting against Republicans in the congress every time.
