Czech President Vaclav Klaus signs EU Lisbon Treaty into law

Mr Klaus was the last head of state to sign the Treaty. It now has legal force across the European Union's 27 countries.

"I announce that I signed the Lisbon Treaty at 15.00 [2pm GMT] today," said Mr Klaus, speaking in the Czech capital, Prague.

He had signalled he would put pen to paper after getting a British-style opt-out to the Charter of Fundamental Rights at an EU summit in Brussels last week.

Gordon Brown earlier welcomed the final ruling by the Czech constitutional court that the Lisbon Treaty would not damage Czech sovereignty.

Like other European leaders, the British Prime Minister is keen to move on from political controversy over the Lisbon Treaty's creation of a new EU president, foreign minister and diplomatic service.

"It is now of course a matter for President Klaus but I believe that the EU made clear the help that we can give to the Czech Republic to enable them to sign and ratify the Lisbon Treaty," said Mr Brown, speaking in London.

EU officials and diplomats have also breathed a sigh of relief over David Cameron's imminent announcement that the Conservative leader will not hold a British referendum on the Lisbon Treaty if he wins general elections next year.

Mr Cameron had angered sparking anger from the leaders of France and Germany by writing to Mr Klaus urging him to delay ratifying the treaty.

"It has been a long road with French, Dutch and Irish referendum rejections along the wayside but at last nothing lies between Europe and its destiny," said a senior EU official.

European leaders are expected to hold a special Brussels summit dinner on Nov 19, or before, to select candidates for an unprecedented EU jobs share out.

Well, I guess that whole 1941-1989 bit was a complete waste. Fought off Berlin and Moscow, and they surrender to Brussels the first chance they get.
