Our next door neighbors just divorced after 43 years of marriage. it’s a he said/she said. She walked out on him, so of course he’s getting all of the sympathy, but I’ve heard her reasons and it’s hard to choose the villain.
Every marriage is a case by case, but often most fit into stereotyped roles. It’s why we don’t call men golddiggers or grave robbers, and it’s why we don’t call women cradle robbers and asswomen.
Do two jerks get married to each other and it fails? Sure. One is a bigger jerk than the other and it doesn’t work? Sure. One’s an extreme jerk and the other can’t seem to do anything to please them? You bet.
There’s just a stigma that exists in divorce law that the guy is always to blame or more at fault just for being a guy. And that is the truth. There is rampant paternalism and there are SOOOO many legal practices and help for women and hardly none for men. They can get free legal help. Men have no avenues like this for them. The over-arching bias is if it falls apart it’s assumed it’s the guys’ fault.
