I suspect that “Dad” and family came to the USA courtesy of the US taxpayer. The US State Dept., and several Christian groups, have imported disadvantaged muslims from somalia, iraq, and numerous other countries.

Moving and living expenses largely, if not totally, paid for with our tax money, or charity in case of some of the Churches. I think a FReeper told me numerous somali muslims were imported into Maine via the Lutheran church.
