Virginians will have an important choice to make in Tuesdays gubernatorial election and we believe the best choice is Republican Bob McDonnell.

On economic development, McDonnell wants to do more to lure businesses to Virginia.

McDonnell wants a $1,000 per job tax credit for companies that create at least 50 new jobs or 25 new jobs in economically distressed areas. Thats the kind of thinking this economically distressed community needs in Richmond.
Its true that the Dan River Regions leadership has worked hard to attract new jobs in manufacturing, technology, research and retail. But Danville has never matched or beaten the states jobless rate. That tells us that were dealing with a long-term problem thats finally being addressed. It also tells us we need a strong partner in the Executive Mansion.
Well have that partner with Bob McDonnell.

Bob McDonnell has run for governor at a pivotal time. The recession appears to be lifting, and with it comes opportunities to find new solutions to old problems. We urge the Dan River Regions voters to put Bob McDonnell to work on those problems by electing him governor on Tuesday.

Hello, Gov. Bob McDonnell! Welcome to my world!

Kaine told a subdued crowd of about 200 at Virginia Commonwealth University that Republicans want to mask McDonnell’s rigidly conservative record and portray himself as a moderate.
“They’re trying to re-create their whole record and say that they’ve had this conversion experience on the road to Election Day,” Kaine said.
“You can tell what someone will do by what he has done. You can tell somebody’s character by whether he’s willing to stand by you,” Kaine said. “When you vote it’s really important to vote on character.”
Kaine said he was not referring solely to the master’s thesis that McDonnell, at age 34, wrote in 1989 disparaging women, gays and unmarried “cohabitators.”
He cited McDonnell’s opposition to the state’s restaurant smoking ban, due to take effect Dec. 1 and a vote he took as a legislator against a resolution urging equal pay for women.

I haven’t heard any discussion of the smoking ban. I’m not a smoker but I’d like this ban repealed. Has anyone heard if this is a campaign issue or not?
Go, McDonnell, go!!!!!
It’s the Taliban ticket. My congressman told me so!
It has not been a campaign issue at all, which is why I have not mentioned it on any of the VA election threads. It has long been a major issue for me and I have fought against such bans for more years than I care to admit.
This is the first I’ve read of any position at all. As pro-business as McDonnell appears to be, there’s a strong chance he’d favor a repeal and put the issue back in the business owners’ hands where it belongs.
Rural Virginia represents needed region for Deeds

When Democratic gubernatorial nominee Creigh Deeds started a push into the states rural stretches three months ago, the campaign believed it had a candidate who could not only offset damage in the traditionally Republican areas, but actually win them.
A day before voters head to the polls, those regions remain just as essential for the Democratic nominee, but increasingly appear to be slipping through his fingers. Deeds, with a series of rural campaign stops over the weekend, signaled that he couldnt afford to let Republican Bob McDonnell score heavily in back roads counties.
But polls suggest the states traditional conservative belt in the south and southwest is poised to follow its long-standing loyalties. And Democrats, though far from giving up on rural voters, have sharply curbed their optimism.

As AG he ruled against Norfolk imposing its own smoking ban based upon VA law. I have to take for granted that is what Kaine is talking about. I have no idea if McD is personally opposed to it. I would hope he is.
I would love to see it repealed, but it won’t happen. The sheeple won’t let it happen because they are selfish and care nothing about property rights.
Is the ban for outdoors also? All those Starbucks and restaurants with outdoor seating areas? Surely they’re exempt from the new law.
There is no outdoor ban. That would be disastrous.
I still can’t figure out why Kaine brought it up, especially at this late date. As much as it has been an issue for me for years - I actually came to FR because of it - it matters not in the VA races as far as I’m concerned.
When my father was growing up in Danville the only jobs
were at the mill or growing tobacco. I used to spend my
summer vacations at my grandparents farm. The mill and
tobacco was all there was even then.
I’m glad I have a childs memories of it, it’s all gone
now, the farm, the brothers and sisters dead, the
younger relations scattered across the country.

Kaine told a subdued crowd of about 200
Hahaha. That’s what the press says when a hundred dispirited
and sullen campaign workers are herded into a venue with
no food and only soda to drink.
Kaine wanted to remind the dem base who the nanny-staters are.
I haven’t been through Danville in probably 15 years. I can see how it would have provided such fond childhood memories for you. The mills were still standing but they were vacant. I don’t know if they’ve been demolished, refurbished or are still hollow, brick shells.
Yes, I thought it was an interesting choice of words, too. Subdued. They know it’s over.
