Planned Parenthood Director Leaves, Has Change of Heart

Planned Parenthood has been a part of Abby Johnson's life for the past eight years; that is until last month, when Abby resigned.

Planned Parenthood has been a part of Abby Johnson's life for the past eight years; that is until last month, when Abby resigned. Johnson said she realized she wanted to leave, after watching an ultrasound of an abortion procedure.

"I just thought I can't do this anymore, and it was just like a flash that hit me and I thought that's it," said Jonhson.

She handed in her resignation October 6. Johnson worked as the Bryan Planned Parenthood Director for two years.

According to Johnson, the non-profit was struggling under the weight of a tough economy, and changing it's business model from one that pushed prevention, to one that focused on abortion.

"It seemed like maybe that's not what a lot of people were believing any more because that's not where the money was. The money wasn't in family planning, the money wasn't in prevention, the money was in abortion and so I had a problem with that," said Johnson.

Johnson said she was told to bring in more women who wanted abortions, something the Episcopalian church goer recently became convicted about.

"I feel so pure in heart (since leaving). I don't have this guilt, I don't have this burden on me anymore that's how I know this conversion was a spiritual conversion."

Johnson now supports the Coalition For Life, the pro-life group with a building down the street from Planned Parenthood. Coalition volunteers can regularly be seen praying on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood. Johnson has been meeting with the coalition's executive director, Shawn Carney, and has prayed with volunteers outside Planned Parenthood.

On Friday both Johnson and the Coalition For Life were issued temporary restraining orders filed by Planned Parenthood.

Rochelle Tafolla, a Planned Parenthood spokesperson issued the following statement: "We regret being forced to turn to the courts to protect the safety and confidentiality of our clients and staff, however, in this instance it is absolutely necessary."

The temporary restraining order contends that Planned Parenthood would be irreparably harmed by the disclosure of certain information, but does not bar Johnson or Coalition For Life volunteers from the premises.

As of Sunday evening, neither Johnson nor Carney had seen the complaint filed against them that prompted the restraining order.

A hearing about the order has been set for November 10.

She means convicted, she is very convinced that abortion is wrong.

From Webster:

1 : the act or process of convicting of a crime especially in a court of law
2 a : the act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth b : the state of being convinced of error or compelled to admit the truth
3 a : a strong persuasion or belief b : the state of being convinced

I've often seen convicted used in this sense to mean that in her heart/soul she was convicted by the Holy Spirit that what she was doing/asked to do was wrong. She was convicted of her sin.

The ultrasound of the abortion procedure has turned some key people aganst abortion, including one of the very early founders/leaders of the ‘pro choice’ movement. Abby won’t be the last. Of course, had that technology been available back in ‘71 we never would have had the Roe v Wade decision.

One has to wonder what the conversion rate would be if every woman going into the center were able to see that video before going forward? Would it be possible, at least at a few centers, to have a video available near the protest/prayer site?

As creepy as this is going to sound, that video she speaks of should be released for all to see. Imagine how many minds that could change.

We have an awesome resource here in St. Louis. They are actually let into the public schools, which is an incredible feat in and of itself.

THere is talk that a portable ultrasound, literally, almost as small as a doppler hearing device (the kind drs put on your belly to hear your babys heartbeat in the office) is in the works or just about done.

Imagine pro lifers having those outside an abortion facility as they pray........

Think she meant *conflicted* - but a murder conviction could have been on her mind. Abortion is murder.

Convicted was correct.

Convict - to convince of error or sinfulness (Webster’s dictionary).

When used by Christians it means that God had convinced someone (or a group) of their error or sinfulness. God reached out and thouched her to convince her of the sin she was involved in. God “convicted” her.

The word convicted derives also from the word "convictions", referring to deeply held beliefs.

We have to be careful when we "correct" the statements of persons who have probably thought out carefully the way they wish to convey their thoughts.

I’m afraid it’s just a response to prevailing cultural realities. Responsible women don’t need Planned Parenthood to educate them about and/or provide contraceptives. The sort of women who need contraceptive education and services are pretty much by definition the ones who can’t or won’t pay for it, but will show up for abortions with cash in hand. They live for the moment and don’t engage in or value advance planning.

Look at all the government programs trying to educate poor (sometimes because they spend all their money on drugs and booze), dysfunctional women about contraceptives and prenatal care. Huge amounts of money are spent sending counselors into their neighborhoods to try to convince them to come into clinics for FREE contraceptives or prenatal care, but there are few takers, and even fewer who subsequently use contraceptives reliably or stop boozing/drugging/smoking after a prenatal care visit to a doctor or nurse practitioner. And the birth rates to women who don’t really want children, and have no means or intention to care for them decently, remain alarmingly high.

Encouraging news! Let’s increase our emotional and material support for those choosing life and continue to pray for each person — young, old, men, women — struggling with this decision. Please pray, too, that our great nation moves away from the destructive cycle of sex-outside-of-marriage and abortion-on-demand.

I think either word, convicted or conflicted, works but it really depends on the context. From a spiritual perspective, it is said quite often that God “convicts” us of our sins and once we are aware of that conviction, we turn to Jesus to wipe away the sin, blotting out the “conviction”. When I think of “conflicted”, I tend to think the context is one of moral conflicts. Of course, abortion should be both a moral conflict and a sin and it is actual murder, as you note.
