Steele Casts Elections As Vote On His Leadership

Steele Casts Elections As Vote On His Leadership In wake of gaffes, RNC chairman predicts a GOP comeback on Tuesday

Nov . 1, 2009

As they campaigned together across Virginia on Thursday and Friday, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele praised Robert F. McDonnell, the state's GOP gubernatorial candidate, as an innovative leader.

McDonnell was just as enthusiastic.

"Thank you to my largest donor, Michael Steele," he told a crowd outside a train depot in Culpeper on Friday, referring to the millions that the RNC has poured into the contest. And seeming to realize the potential double meaning of his words as Steele's 6-foot-4 frame towered over everyone, McDonnell joked, "And also my tallest."

Steele smiled at the rhetorical embrace by McDonnell, who polls show is leading in Tuesday's contest against Democrat R. Creigh Deeds — a reality that could mean as much to Steele as if he were the candidate himself.

Once heavily embattled because of a series of gaffes that infuriated his fellow Republicans, Steele is already taking steps to cast strong showings in Tuesday's races in New Jersey, Virginia and New York as signs of both a Republican comeback and his own successful leadership.

The chairman didn't miss a beat Saturday when a Republican candidate in New York state, Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, dropped out of the race in the state's 23rd Congressional District, bowing to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. In a statement, Steele said he "respects" Scozzafava's decision, then noted that the RNC would endorse Hoffman.

“In a statement, Steele said he “respects” Scozzafava’s decision, then noted that the RNC would endorse Hoffman.”

Hardly classifiable as leadership.

I wonder if Steele will run up to NY23 and do a few stops with DeDe?

Wait - I think DeDe pulled out. Maybe She and Steele can do a few stops for the person she endorsed. Grrrrrrrr.

Guess maybe his polling shows a tidal wave approaching.

He thinks there’s still time to learn to surf. And buy a surfboard. And learn to swim.

We don’t want GOP leadership we want conservative.

Steele is a weak follower I have no idea how he got there but, it is our chance to lead with a face and we can take advantage of it.

Steele talks the talk and carries the message really well and has a good fighting spirit...

But I emailed him this week informing him that we would not be fooled again by the republican brand...that I would keep my money and decide which candidates to support myself in light of the serious mistake the RNC made with DeDe Scozzocrat! The RNC better quit choosing progressive candidates and get back to it’s base...or else move over and get out of our way to bring this country back!

We will no longer tolerate those pretending to reach across the aisle and expand entitlements which this country cannot sustain! And that we need a strong leadership with the strength to slash and burn programs currently bringing this country to its knees.

It's an unexpected turn for the party's first black chairman, who campaigned on a pledge that he would help rebrand a wounded GOP...

By putting RINOs on the ticket in NY23? The only way that you "rebrand" the wounded GOP is to take off the current "brand" and get us back to the party of Reagan!
