"But sexual selection was supposedly part of survival of the fittest." It is. Among species where outright survival is fairly achievable, other normally less important criteria start having an effect.

But does not evolutionary theory say that those displays are part of sexual selection by determining the most fit for reproduction? and therefore survival of their genes?
