Congressional campaign in upstate New York could play a big role in the GOP's approach to the 2010 elections and beyond.
What began as a little-noticed congressional campaign in upstate New York has become a high-profile battle for the direction of the Republican Party, and it could play a big role in the GOP's approach to the 2010 elections and beyond.
With Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman mounting a serious challenge to moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava and Democrat Bill Owens, prominent Republicans are splitting support between Hoffman and Scozzafava, providing an unusually raw display of the party's divisions.
Supporters of Mr. Hoffman, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, say the GOP needs to return to its conservative roots. Backers of Scozzafava, such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, say the party must embrace centrists who can capture swing districts.
There have been few neutral surveys in recent weeks, but polls backed by both liberal and conservative groups suggest this has become a two-person race between Owens and Hoffman. Democrats, clearly viewing it that way, have been aiming their fire at Hoffman.

GOP, get this. This is only the first move on a complete and utter open season on all RINO’s.
Get this!!! We want our party back just as much as we want our COUNTRY back.
You have been warned. Get out of town
Conservatism — There is no such equalizer as freedom
Newt. Your wrong. Stop strategizing and stick to conservative principals. Or do you really have any? Are you just strategizing to get the Republicans back in power? Just saying what you think the electorate want to hear?
If so, your ship has sailed.
Either commence to fighting or get out of the way.
The GOP needs to get Scozza to hold a press conference and bow out this weekend - throwing all of her support behind Hoffman.
I would never want to live in New York, but the presence of fusion parties like the Conservative Party is one of the few good things. If you’re a Republican, you can prove your convictions for smaller government/lower taxes and get the Conservative endorsement or you can’t. Everyone knows the Republican Party of NY is a shell, a zombie political party. Its last statewide office holder was George Pataki (whose margin of victory in 1994 over Mario Cuomo came from the Conservative Party).
That sure would be nice. Give them a call, write them, write them on theri Facebook, harass them until they do.
When will conservatives stop voting for the liberal GOP?
The NY GOP can’t groom a conservative guy if their lives depended on it. They have lost their way. I think the NY-23 race gave them a slap in the face. However, I think they are too ignorant to notice.
When they stop signing on to the rest of the Neocon agenda advocated for by the Republican Establishment: endless wars in the Middle East, corporate welfare, "trickle down" economics, etc.
The GOP thinks the opposite, that Hoffman should throw his support to Scozzafaza. It is best that Hoffman beat them headup to show true conservative strength. Show them that they need us, not vice versa.
Here’s why the liberal wing of the GOP needs to come to grips with - Newt and Steele get educated! Here’s why you are history.

Which Leftist clown posse do you work for? DNC? Moveon.org? Act Up? The 0 Regime? You just exposed yourself Leftist troll.
There is nothing "Neo Con" about "Trickle down" economics. Supply side Economics has worked every time it has been tried.
So you post 3 ignorant Leftist lies in a row that have no base in anything other then the deluded Leftists ignorant rantings about Conservatives.
So which Leftist fraud propaganda outfit do you work for?
Ah, looks like you have stumbled onto the exact wrong forum. We actually know that trickle down economics works. And the use of the word “neocon” is also a dead give away to your true beliefs.
Left Wing Troll on board.
Hear! Hear! THE MAN!
At best, such logic would apply only in swing districts. NY23 isn't one of those.
In reality, the GOP's first choice in any and all districts should be the candidate best able to lead by actually selling conservative ideas and principles to non-ideological voters. Choosing a moderate should only be done when an effective salesman for conservatism can't be found in a swing district.
