Ethics panel to probe Reps. Maxine Waters, Laura Richardson

The House ethics committee has voted to begin full-scale investigations into ethics allegations against Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters (Calif.) and Laura Richardson (Calif.), but decided against investigating Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.).

After Thursday’s votes, Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Jo Bonner (R-Ala.), chairwoman and ranking member of the committee, went to the House floor to assure members that a cyber-hacking incident – which apparently resulted, they said, in an internal panel document ending up in the hands of the Washington Post – did not signal a major security breach of the committee’s computer system. They suggested that the document in question, if real, could be a “weekly report” circulated within the panel.

The hacking incident came as the ethics committee, already under heavy pressure over its year-long probe of Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), added two more members to its target list.

The votes on Waters and Richardson marked the first time that any referrals from the independent Office of Congressional Ethics had led to a full-blown investigation by the ethics committee. The two ethics watchdogs had clashed publicly over the Graves’ case, and the verbal sniping continued on Thursday.

Graves invited a business partner of his wife to testify before the Small Business Committee in March without disclosing his own financial ties to the witness. The congressman’s wife, Lesley Graves, and Brooks Hurst are both investors in an ethanol plant in Missouri.

In a 541-page report issued along with its decision not to investigate Graves, the ethics committee said OCE “did not assert that Representative Graves violated any House rule or standard of conduct, but suggested that his actions created an ‘appearance of conflict of interest.’”

OK, how bad has it got to be if a Democratic panel decides to investigate Waters and the other women, but passes on a Republican?

Looks like the corrupt members of the House (notice I was nice and didn’t say members of the House) as well as the SOOC are not going to like the new OCE looking over their shoulders.

The OCE is going to embarrass the SOOC every time the SOOC exonerates another corrupt member, Pelosi must be sorry she created them. LOL!

Maxine Waters will walk, not much doubt about it.

I think corruption is a universal hazard to the ruling classes...universal in that they all suffer from some degree or another.

But if you feel some need to assign priorities, I'd start with democrat; anything else is a subcategory.

Unfortunately, we're becoming almost desensitized to the absurdity of it all. Or at least that's what they're counting on...
