.- Joining the response to U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedys charge that the Catholic bishops are spreading discord on health care reform, Archbishop of New York Timothy Dolan has said the congressmans remarks were sad, uncalled-for, and inaccurate and has asked for an apology.
In an interview with CNSNews.com, Rep. Kennedy (D-RI), son of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, had accused the Catholic Church of fanning the flames of dissent and discord because Catholic bishops declared that they will oppose the proposed health care reform unless it explicitly prohibits funding of abortion.
Archbishop Dolan commented on Rep. Kennedys remarks in an Oct. 26 blog post on the Archdiocese of New Yorks website.
The Catholic community in the United States hardly needs to be lectured to about just healthcare. Weve been energetically into it for centuries. And we bishops have been advocating for universal healthcare for a long, long time.
All we ask is that it be just that -- universal -- meaning that it includes the helpless baby in the womb, the immigrant, and grandma in a hospice, and that it protects a healthcare providers right to follow his/her own conscience.
This is what the President says he wants; this is what we bishops say we want, he continued.
The archbishop said that Bishop of Providence Thomas Tobin, Rep. Kennedys bishop, had a good point in saying that the Congressman owes an apology to the Catholic Church.
Bishop Tobin also called Kennedy a disappointment to the Catholic Church and criticized his remarks as irresponsible.

How much longer will the church tolerate these pro death democrats?
I love that last line. Too bad the bishop thinks Obama wants exactly what the Bishops want.
I don’t care if it was Patrick Kennedy who said this about the bishops. His remarks might have been wrong but he is entitled to his opinion. I am really sick and tired of everyone demanding an apology for every silly remark made these days. We have become a nation of apologists and we are not the better for it.
Why does anyone even listen to a Kennedy anymore?

An opinion is one thing; this was a lie. Lies require apologies.
Your post is wholly out of order and you should apologize for it.
I can’t understand why so many in the Church are liberals. Yeah, I can some of the sweet inexperienced ones being liberal out of some kind of naive optimism, but those bishops are tough cookies and don’t have an ounce of naivete in them. Some longtime observer of the Church please explain that to this baby Catholic.
“How much longer will the church tolerate these pro death democrats?”
As long as families like the Kennedys fill the collection plate.
One absurd post per thread is enough. No need to repeat it.
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) is an elected official, not a private citizen. As such his opinion reflects on the folks who elected him. He has the responsibility to get the facts of the matter correct.
Unfortunately, like many of our elected officials with disordered minds, Patrick probably cannot connect the dots, or conduct an intelligent conversation.
We can only hope that he repents and at least remains silent on matters beyond his capability to reason.
Dear Archbishop Dolan.
Stop whining. Stop begging. Act.
Excommunicate this drunken Kennedy.
Oh please, it’s not like Kennedy was sober when he said it.
Archbishop Dolan does not have the authority to Excommunicate Patrick Kennedy.
That authority is in the hands of Bishop Tobin. May God grant him the wisdom and courage to exercise his office appropriately.
I apologize...
