Obama to sign 2010 defense spending bill this week

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The White House said Tuesday that President Barack Obama would approve the Defense Department's $680 billion budget for fiscal 2010, which includes funding to increase military personnel and support the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The bill also includes the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard bill, a Wyoming teen murdered in 1998 because he was a homosexual. The act provides additional support for local law enforcement and prosecutors to try violent crimes that are motivated by the victim's religion, color, gender, or sexual orientation.

Obama will sign the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act on Wednesday afternoon during a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.

The bill marks a transition in defense spending, moving away from big-ticket items for conventional warfare to instead fund more troops and equipment for fighting small wars. It also allows for the Pentagon to increase its intelligence services that had been most recently contracted out to private businesses.

More money for continuing the small wars.

Why 10000 Humvees? More wheeled deathtraps for U.S. troops to ride in. Doesn't give the same level of protection and mobility as a robust tracked M113.

'94 military report panned Humvee as 'deathtrap'

Add to that the hypocritical Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Homosexuality is still a sin, everyone knows that.

obama take NO responsiblity for the spending. He’ll just chalk it to, well it was law before he came into office. Even if he did nothing, it will still cost this amount. Hello? You’re President now, every spending is your fault, if you don’t like it, do something about it, instead of blaming ppl before you

I resent you Mr. President...and every liberal politician who sold our American soul by attaching this abhorrant "Hate Crimes" legislation which will turn into the Thought police in very short order.

You listen to everyone except the majority of the people.

I wonder if this hate crime garbage is even constitutional. I hope someone goes after it on that basis.

It is going to be challenged as soon as it is signed. It is unconsitutional and the SCOTUS will likely strike it down.

And it sickens me that everyone holds the Matthew Sheppard case up as the “reason” for this law. The crime against Sheppard had nothing to do with his sexual orientation. But that's not “sexy” enough so the homosexual's attach meaning to that which, of course, furthers their perverse agenda. The college that I attend ( rather small and “faith based) is actually putting on a production of “The Laramie Project” and then offering a “discussion” on the merits of this legislation. I intend to go because I want someone to tell me how killing a white heterosexual is any less hateful than killing a homosexual. Equal protection under the law is out the window. Like in Animal Farm..some are now “more equal” than others..

It’s a hate crime to hate the hate crime.

Is there a reason why they couldn’t finish the entire budget in time for Oct 1st? I know if I were a month behind at my job, I would have a lot of explaining to do.

"Is there a reason why they couldn't finish the entire budget in time for Oct 1st?"

Yes, and it has been discussed and cussed many times.

The Congressional Cardinals aka the majority and minority chairmen of the appropriation committees prefer to drag it out so that they can insert more pork.

You said it. Why does the MSM and liberal groups keep lying about Matthew Shepherd? It’s tragic that those goons killed him, but it wasn’t because he was gay. THEY DID NOT TARGET HIM FOR BEING GAY!!!

And yet this article matter of factly states that he was killed for being homosexual.

Whoever said it about “the big lie” or “repeating lies over and over again” was absolutely right. Now the popular culture accepts without question that Matthew Shepherd was targeted for killing due to being gay.
