Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Tuesday that hed back a GOP filibuster of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reids health care reform bill.
Lieberman, who caucuses with Democrats and is positioning himself as a fiscal hawk on the issue, said he opposes any health care bill that includes a government-run insurance program even if it includes a provision allowing states to opt out of the program, as Reids has said the Senate bill will.
"We're trying to do too much at once," Lieberman said. To put this government-created insurance company on top of everything else is just asking for trouble for the taxpayers, for the premium payers and for the national debt. I dont think we need it now."
Lieberman added that hed vote against a public option plan even with an opt-out because it still creates a whole new government entitlement program for which taxpayers will be on the line." .................
Go Joe Go!!!!!
Do these people not get it? There isn’t going to be a filibuster because the Dems will simply change the rules. Remember, the ends always justify the means with liberals & fascists. Fifty votes is all that this is going to require for passage.
He’s assuming the GOPers have the stones to filibuster.
I have no allusions of Joe being one of “our guys”, but he does come down on the right side of things once in a blue moon. On this, and on Iraq and Afghanistan, I give Joe kudos.
I’d love to see the invective over at the DailyKos and OpenLeft right now.
Academic slimy reid will go nuclear thats all
Stop this bill, Joe, and all sins forgiven.
Are we chosing up sides already? Game on!
Good for Joe Lieberman! On this one, at least. I just wish he’d keep heading rightward on other issues.
I like Joe Lieberman, the only good decision that Al Gore ever made.....
They'd have to go Nuclear. I still think that there's a reasonable chance that would happen. We've got to find 8 Democratic Senators to vote no on the bill, not just on the cloture vote.
Also, on practical grounds, this means Reid needs at least one Republican to make up that lost vote. Since the most liberal Republican, Snowe, has fallen away, it seems Reid is dead in the water on this. Lieberman’s defection also opens the door to more Democrats to announce opposition like Nelson, Landreu, Lincoln, Pryor, etc.
Even stupid people who follow politics know that if you vote for cloture, but vote against the bill, you’re still for the bill.
And that means (if Snow’s support makes a bill “bi-partisan”) that the rejection of the bill would be BI-PARTISAN. It’s a beautiful thing.
After next Tuesday, they won’t even have 50 votes.
Lots of Joe’s doing good things so The good name award goes to: JOE
Good one! Pelosi's double speak has reached a new low point. The Competitive Option meaning: "Hey private sector, just try to compete against our taxpayer funded health insurance..."
Occasionally Joe does some good unlike the rest of the worthless SOB’s warming a chair with their butts in DC
