Ideology trumps party for Palin
Washington Post ^ | 10/26/2009 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 10/25/2009 9:27:15 PM PDT by Saije

Sarah Palin's decision late last week to endorse the Conservative Party candidate over the Republican nominee in a special U.S. House election in Upstate New York is the latest example that the former Alaska governor's allegiance is to her conservative principles rather than the party's edicts.

"Republicans and conservatives around the country are sending an important message to the Republican establishment in their outstanding grassroots support for Doug Hoffman: no more politics as usual," Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

She also cited President Ronald Reagan's belief that "blurring the lines" is not the way to rebuild the party and added: "The Republican Party today has decided to choose a candidate who more than blurs the lines, and there is no real difference between the Democrat and the Republican in this race."

Palin is the highest-profile Republican to endorse Hoffman over state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R) in the Nov. 3 special election for the seat vacated by John McHugh, who President Obama named secretary of the Army. The race has rapidly developed into a battle for control of the party's direction.

Palin joins former senators Rick Santorum (Pa.) and Fred Thompson (Tenn.) and former House majority leader Dick Armey (Tex.) in Hoffman's camp. Among those who have endorsed Scozzafava is former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.).

Of his decision to back Scozzafava, Gingrich wrote last Thursday: "We have to decide which business we are in. If we are in the business about feeling good about ourselves while our country gets crushed then I probably made the wrong decision."

***At issue is the debate between the "head" choice (Scozzafava, because she is the party's candidate) and the "heart" choice (Hoffman, because his belief system hews closer to core conservative principles).

Maybe at some point the GOP can figure out a way to keep us from having to make this choice, party vs. beliefs.

For many of us it is simple: take back our Republican Party.

If there maust be a third party then it will be made up of limp-wristed moderates.

Conservatism first. GOP next, maybe.

Saw Gingrich on C-Span desperately trying to overcome Palin, Armey, and Thompson’s support for Hoffmam...heh, no sale! I’m afraid that he has become the quintessential Republican - all for power, who cares about anything except the politics and the power. He just does not GET IT! but that is okay because the people do!

Doug Hoffman is a Republican and the several decades old Conservative Party of NY are Republicans
If Hoffman wins, he will caucus with the Republicans.
He said the other day, he is a Conservative Reagan Republican

Hoffman is a Conservative Republican.

I know. We’ve donated to Mr. Hoffman.

I see him as the ‘real’ Republican in this race, and not Dodo Scuzzy, or whatever is her name.

Yes, probably right, but at this point, we just need a real Conservative Republican who will actually vote for smaller government and lower taxes. Seems to be a very unusual prospect and my not actually be so, but at least he says the right words... If not, we can always vote him out in short order!!

Said differently... For some republicans, but damn-near all democrats, party loyalty trumps patriotism and the ideals on which the country was founded.

Sarah is a big tent republican. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a Freeper.

I’m a big tent republican.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1821435/posts?page=6245#6245
Here’s an analogy to work with. Take a small box and fill it with some rocks. Then add some rice, filling it to the top. Now take all the same stuff, but in a different order. Put in the rice first, then add the rocks. What you’ll find is that if you put in the big stuff first, the small stuff will fit around it. But if you put in the small stuff first, the big stuff won’t have room. The republican tent is the box. The Big issues are the socon issues, to be put in first. The little issues are things that can be accommodated around the bigger stuff. A candidate who tries to focus on the smaller issues first and leave out the bigger issues has no way of getting all of us into the tent. He splits the party. The candidate who gets the big stuff right and as much of the little stuff that will fit, he can fit more into the tent. We’re often amazed at how much rice can keep fitting in. Rudy Giuliani flunks some of the big issues, and on some of the little issues it looks to me like anyone else’s rice would do just as well. All that remains for us to agree on is which are the bedrock principles and which are not. Why would there be so much invective aimed at rudy from the right? Because there are some bedrock principles that he is leaving out. Bad move. I see rudybot postings all the time saying that they would vote for Hunter, and I see socon postings that say they would not vote for rudy. That’s a BIG indicator of a few bedrock principles that are being left outside the tent in order to let in some rice.
