Since taking office nearly three years ago, Charlie Crist has made his mark as the green governor.
He organized climate change summits with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, mandated future government buildings be energy efficient and equipped with solar panels and pushed legislators and Florida Power & Light to build the largest solar power facility in the country.
But when President Barack Obama arrives in Arcadia Tuesday to promote climate change legislation and the opening of the solar plant Crist helped push through, the governor will not be there.
Chalk it up to politics.
Crist cannot afford the political risk of being seen with Obama as he faces an increasingly difficult Republican primary campaign in his bid to win a U.S. Senate seat in 2010.
In addition, the image he once proudly crafted as an environmental leader, particularly on climate change, has become more of a hindrance than a benefit as he battles Marco Rubio for the Republican nomination. On the stump, Rubio is criticizing Crist's stance on climate change as one of the reasons Republican voters should side with him.
Conservative voters, who make up the core of Republican primary elections, are still fuming that Crist appeared with Obama in February to promote the $787 billion federal stimulus bill, said David Johnson, a Republican political consultant. Appearing as a leader on climate change issues or glad-handing with Obama are out of the question now, Johnson said.

I wonder what Obama’s record is for how many consecutive days actually stayed in DC?
The Undocumented One is turning into campaign poison - too bad, so sad.
LOL! God I cannot stand Charlie Crist.
Charlie Crist - you lie! He said FL had no ACORN problem and the state did no business with CORN - both LIES.
Crist also gave felons the right to vote after getting out of jail. Crist is a POS.
Oh and another thing about Crist. That jerk o*f held a global warming summit the first week after he was elected. I am NOT kidding.
2nd. He’s also gay.
As a Florida resident, I’ve found Crist to be very tough on law and order and a fiscal conservative who insists on balancing the state budget. He’s cut much of the state bureaucracy and payroll. We still have no state income tax. However, Rubio is a better conservative and I’ll support him. Crist is not a RINO but more of a libertarian.
There has to be a tanning salon appointment conflict, otherwise he'd be there.
ZERO, just like him!
All Conservatives are voting against him!...and for his opponent that is a Conservative - Rubio. If you really want to make a statement, vote Rubio! Christ is a RINO and does NOT deserve to be elected!! We can continue the some old politics as usual or get someone else in charge - now is the time!!
Coattails...
Crist is not a RINO but more of a libertarian.
On what planet? No libertarian would support porkulus. On what basis do you say this? Are you equally delusional about Bill Maher being a libertarian as well?
Please...Don’t let this creep win the Republican nomination! His opponent is much more or a conservative Bolio (spelling ?). Bolio is supported by most Conservatives and should prevail against the liberal Christ!
Crist can take his green weenie and go north as far as I’m concerned! His ideological idiocy belongs with the Dmeocrats of which he is one... Can’t believe that the Republican party endorsed him - but with the way that they are acting these days - should not be such a surprise... Pulling for his opponent - ya know, the Conservative Rubio!!
Just so that you know.
Next to MittWitt and Pansy Grahamnesty, Charlie Crist is the biggest RINO in the party. He along with Pansy will swish their tails at anything liberal. Tarp, Crap and Tax, he just loves the greenie stuff, felons voting, he loves ACORN and believes they are no problem in FL (even though they’ve been picked up in this state for fabricating voters). He’s gay. Just like Mitt, he will pretend to be whatever he needs to be to fool some people (I’m looking in your direction) into believing he is a conservative, libertarian, liberaltarian, etc., you name it, whatever, when he is really a lying pretender who will do whatever he has to to get elected. Don’t let him fool you.
Actually, most of my comments are a paraphrase of a National Review magazine article to which I can refer you. Of course, you’re entitled to disagree with that view. However, I have to say that when you introduce such unsubstantiated and slanderous remarks as “He’s gay,” you don’t advance your argument by engaging in character assassination that’s more worthy of a Paul Begala or other Clinton hacks.
GO AWAY.
