Good link. I read the “No Country” book a while back but did not see the movie until this weekend.

I believe that things are indeed fundamentally different now in the borderlands, and that we are seeing the spread of narco-state on both sides of the border. If Mexico is not already a failed state, it is very close. I was down there in DF twice in the last month, visited the border area three times in the last year, and it feels very spooky. TX is certainly shaky, NM too. I do not feel safe in either state except in areas I know well.
