Video: California treasurer tells legislature to get a clue (2/3 of legislation is just junk !)

I’m not sure which is most amusing about Bill Lockyer’s rant to the state legislature this week. Is it his assertion that Democrats have to call out other Democrats when they run off the rails? Perhaps his telling them that two-thirds of what they produce is “just junk”? Insisting that more taxes won’t solve their problems, and that they have to start looking for ways to save money instead? Actually, all of that and more is just simple truth. Watch this first and see if you catch my favorite moment in this clip:

I’ll trust that you’ve watched it and point to this passage as the best part of the rant:

"It’s impossible for this legislature to reform the pension system, and if we don’t, we bankrupt the state. And I don’t think anybody can do it here, because of who elected you. … You’re just captive of the current environment — I don’t see any way out!"

Translation: Democrats are too far into the pockets of the unions to effectively govern California. That is what created the Golden State debacle, and the marriage to the unions keeps the Democrats from making the budgetary decisions necessary to rescue California from ruin.

However, even if Bill Lockyer can’t see any way out, I see one: stop electing Democrats to the Legislature. If the state GOP doesn’t have this clip in ads by the end of next week, maybe California needs better GOP leadership, too.

It is just crazy the rules that are set in place for Unions at the State, County and city level.

You can work overtime you last three years and retire at 80-90% of your highest income year or your highest 3 years.

So if you earn, because of your dedication to overtime, $150,000 you can retire with a check of $120,000 per year for life!!!

Think that is crazy? What if you could retire at about the age of 50, with a $120,000 retirement check coming every year? Sound like a good deal? It gets better.

That Gold Plated health insurance you had as an employee follows you into retirement. Great huh? Sure it is, because it would cost, at your age, $400 per month or $4,800 per year. But you were a government employee so you don’t pay for your insurance, as a retiree.

Want better deals on cars, airfare, hotels, etc? Some retirees are able to take advantage of union provided exchange services to get the best deals so they can vacation around the country at prices you wouldn’t believe and can’t get yourself.

Now who can do this? Most union employees, of a government. Teachers, prison guards, police, etc.

Now here is the kicker, you and I would have to save for a retirement package like that but, if you are a union employee you didn’t have to alter your at all, save putting the same hours many of us put in for our regular private jobs.

They can even reapply for their old job after some dark period and as an experienced person receive their previous wage or even better.

So now they are making upwards of $200,000 per year for producing what?

So let’s see, I put in nothing toward my retirement, I begin to work 55-60 hours for three years before I retire and retire with, oh say, 80% of my best years wages.

Oh and when I turn 65 I can still get the Social Security check to supplement my retirement and I don’t have to worry about my costs for health care. I still have my Gold Plated insurance card.

Here is an example of Illinois Teachers. It is a video - 10 mins: http://www.championnews.net/article.php?sid=1901

Here is an article that graphically illustrates how wonderful it is to be government retiree: http://www.championnews.net/article.php?sid=2091

GM had a similar system in place and look what happened to them. The only problem with GM is they do not have the power to confiscate the money of taxpayers to pay for the retirement of their union members.

The whole system eventually unraveled for GM. It is only a matter of time before the same thing happens to California.

I'm glad Ponch and John get such a sweet deal.

And Martin Mullner's character.

And Randy Mantooth too. Don't get me started on him.

You're joking, right?

Exactly. GM is a private company and should have gone bankrupt. It would have given them leverage to negotiate their legacy costs and they may have come out a stronger company.

As it is, their leadership will likely be decimated. If someone came in and told me they were cutting my wages they way the government is doing I would leave.

In fact, in 2002 many of my peers walked out the door after our comp plan was changed. Why? Because a few thieves had submitted false sales contracts and were comp’d for doing nothing more than filling out fraudulent paper work.

Yes, any salesman can walk. A Real Salesman can sell for anyone and sell anything of value to a prospect.

A company has an obligation to pay for production to the Salesman and the support team.

If they are not willing to honor their commitment, a salesman will absolutely walk and go to a company that will pay them what they are worth.

What is a salesman worth? About 10% or more in total compensation.

So for 10% of $2 million in production a salesman would earn $200,000 or more for the year.

If he produced $50 million then he should be comp’d $5 million and more.

Don’t like it? Try working for a company that doesn’t sell anything.

Think you can do a better job for less? Feel free and tell me how you feel when you learn how much your contemporaries are earning.

achieve their goals.

I was bringing in new business for my employer 2 minutes after I shook their hand. I don’t need a ramp up period.

My former employer? Sales is an art and there a lot of things you need to know perform your job well. You need to understand your products and how it will help a client. You may even need to combine products to achieve several positive results.

You also need to have exceptional skills for understanding your clients needs and demonstrating how they can predictably achieve their goals.

The ramp at most companies is 6 months. So they lost current production and had to wait 6 months to 1 year to see if someone was going to produce.

The employer I went to work for got an over achieving salesman, well actually 4, and we took their sales to a whole new level.

We made it clear what we thought about getting paid and never had a problem.

It was a terrific opportunity for them and a win win for everyone.

I don’t care how long it took to replace me.

Little secret about the best salespeople: We are hired mercenaries and so long as we paid and rewarded for being overachievers, everyone is happy.

Good post with good information.

Personally, I think 10% for someone who can get prospects to take out their checkbook is a very good deal.

You just don’t get it. We HAVE to have these kinds of compensation packages to get and keep good people. If we don’t they will walk.
