Republicans going rogue in upstate New York
Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 24, 2009 | Patrik Jonsson

This fall's only congressional election, featuring a third-party conservative challenging the Republican nominee, tests the future of the GOP. Will the Tea Party insurgency prevail?

Atlanta

Pitting conservative purists against party pragmatists, a growing number of national Republican figures are bucking the party standard and backing a third-party candidate in the sole congressional election scheduled this year, upstate New York’s 23rd congressional district.

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, former Senator Rick Santorum, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, current Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, former Tennessee Senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson, and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes have all backed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman over Republican Dede Scozzafava.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty — a potential presidential candidate in 2012 — suggested Friday on ABC News that he’s strongly considering backing Hoffman, as well.

“Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a time for choosing,” Ms. Palin, author of the upcoming book, “Going Rogue,” wrote Thursday on her Facebook page. “This is the game-changer,” added Dick Armey, whose Freedom Works organization has supported the Tea Party movement.

Palin, et al. represent what can only be called the Tea Party insurgency, whose adherents point to mainstream Republicans — including party philosopher Newt Gingrich — and their support of Ms. Scozzafava as another sign that the GOP has strayed from its core principles.

This is big leagues, folks, no doubt about it. New York 23rd C.D.

Agree completely. It's for the marbles.

Anybody who wants to regain control of the GOP would be advised to contribute to Hoffman -- even if it is the only contribution they make all year.

Scozzafava isna’t a “pragmatist,” she’s a liberal.

Years ago the Christian Science Monitor and U.S. News and World Report were solidly conservative publications. Since they have been slowly penetrated by The Left so they are now almost like all the others.

The question is whether people are willing to vote party, or belief. We will then know if New York, and by extrapolation, our country, will survive, in peace, or become another socialist disaster, with the attendant civil war.

In any event, I don’t consider folks like Armey and others who support amnesty, as part of ANY “conservative” party/movement.

I don't recall Armey supporting amnesty. Regardless, he is definitely a conservative. Per your tagline, the same with Palin. I don't remember her supporting amnesty either. Do you not think she is a conservative?

Are you sure you are not one of the troll one issue dividers that elected Obama? Just asking!

I think we can assume most R’s in upstate NY watch Fox, so they should be getting the info on Dede. The poll I quoted is from Oct 13-15, and I expect now, ten days later, that Dede’s numbers have dropped significantly. I saw the numbers again...D 33, R 29, C 23. Hoffman needs 11 percent to overcome the D, but complicating matters, 15 percent are undecided.

from the article-

“They’re making New York 23 a last stand,” blogger Erick Erickson tells Politico. “New York should be a hill to die on for conservative activists.”

I only 30 minutes ago sent a donation to Russell. It did not hurt that he was endorsed by Sarah. Indeed, I have ceased giving monies to the RNC and instead am targetting my money to candidates more in line with my beliefs and mores. I will continue to do this throughout the coming year and pray that by taking responsibility for my actions in this regard, the Lord may Bless me.

God Bless you and your fervor. I do support anti-abortion causes as well.

Folks, this NOT the only congressional election this year. There is a special election for the 10th congressional district of California between rat John Garamendi and Republican David Harmer. This seat had been held by rat Ellen Tauscher until she joined Zero’s team.

Does that district include the east bay towns of Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette, Walnut Creek? I admit I haven't been out there in awhile, but have family members who live there. I think it's a pretty BLUE area. Does Harmer have a chance?

Yeah, I have a friend who is walking precincts in Lafayette today. The other ones probably are too, but you never know with gerrymandering.

That district used to be held by a Republican until Tauscher took over, then was secured for her by gerrymandering. But Harmer might have a chance.

Interesting... thanks, CounterCounterCulture.

I hate gerrymandering. That's one reason why we ended up with a 'RAT congress critter (John Larson, D-CT) as well.

Yes, I do believe the Lib MoveOn Soros Machine has infiltrated the RePUBIC Party. I believe MANY PALMS are being WELL-GREASED in Satan’s private “GREENROOMS.” Despite what Rush, Levin, Hannity, et al say...I believe it will be necessary to abandon it, sooner rather than later. A “Conservative Party” win here will def. be a game-changer.
And Michael Steele will be quaking in his shoes.
