Read post #180 and the contents from the link. Keep in mind the typical flu strain kills 36,000 Americans each year and yet no National emergency is ever declared. The swine flu has killed 5,000 over the last several months. It's far less deadly than the typical strain.

The swine flu has killed 5,000 over the last several months. It's far less deadly than the typical strain. That's my impression, as well, but because of the unusual age distribution we really, really need case fatality rates to make a judgement.
Why CDC doesn't publish that data, 26 weeks into the event, is unclear.

Unfortunately that 36,000 deaths from flu every year is made up like all the other numbers. They were not collecting data on the number of flu deaths each year. Someone at CDC made that number up at the time panic over Mexico was welling up in April.
