The Dems' tsunami: Centrists may do them in
NY Post ^ | October 24, 2009 | Jonah Goldberg

One of the most macabre images I've ever heard de scribed came in the after math of the Asian tsunami in 2004. Before the tidal wave crashed on shore, beachgoers stood around and idly gaped as the water drastically receded. Bewildered, they didn't realize they were looking at the prelude to a calamity.

The Democratic Party looks more and more like those beachgoers every day, watching popular support recede, oblivious to the Perot tsunami coming our way.

In 1992, the incumbent president, George H.W. Bush, was a disappointment to his party's base and a pariah to the Democrats. Government seemed to have lost its grip. The deficit became a massive issue, a symbol of out-of-control government. The hangover of Cold War sacrifices, the S&L bailout, runaway crime, huge trade deficits, the long-term trend of manufacturing decline and, of course, the recession contributed to the sense that America desperately needed to get its house in order.

Rodney King and the LA riots done him in, most of the others mentioned before the recession were trivial compared to that.

If the GOP can convincingly align with and exploit the growing Perotista discontent, it very well might ride to victory on a tsunami the Democrats can't even see.

It's a wonderful thought, but I doubt it will happen. Too many compromisers, a la Newt Gingrich, in the party leadership.

Either the party will get new leadership between now and 2012, or there is a significant chance of another third party move. Goldberg is right. The tea partiers have had it with both parties. It's not a Republican movement, although many traditional Republicans are involved. There's something new going on, and neither party seems to appreciate what it is.

Party leadership lacks imagination. Their thinking is narrow and stereotypical, which is why they refuse to back Hoffman in the NY 23rd race, though he is the only real Republican in it.

I just came from a thread by some tech writer who couldn’t put a full sentence together to this: “de scribed” and “after math”. From Jonah Goldberg? Or from whoever transcribed it for the web, possibly. I had to visit the link to see if it was that way there and, sure enough, it was. “after math” was at a line break, but that was likely because of cell width (butted up against the right column). If written correctly, the entire word would have been on the following line.

I’ll give Jonah a pass. I just don’t see him being this careless. But whoever sets this up for HTML needs to be clued in.

The problem is the GOP is turning off the base by supporting liberals and radicals. Its not listening to the grassroots. So it may well miss the tsunami it wants to ride back to power.

Just heard about Pelosi & Reid's plan to push through "universal voter registration" early next year. This would mean that anyone with a driver's license, property owners, welfare recipients, etc., would automatically be registered to vote without any action on their part. States let non-citizens who are legal residents obtain driver's licenses, so there will be many non-citizens registered to vote, along with people who own property in two locations getting listed twice, etc. (Some states let illegal aliens get driver's licenses, which is even worse.)

In short, the voter fraud situation will get much worse in time for the 2010 election if this gets through.

This was on C-SPAN--broadcast of an Accuracy in Media convention...John Fund calling attention to the problem.

The GOP is still beating that dead horse known as “big tent” politics. Appeal to everybody and you can’t possibly lose ... right?

That philosophy has failed repeatedly but they still don’t get it.

More proof that these people do not have the country's best interest at heart. Throw the bums out!
