A Dallas rookie police officer erred when he cited a woman earlier this month for being a non-English speaking driver, police said.

Officer Gary Bromley issued a citation Oct. 2 to 48-year-old Ernestina Mondragon after stopping her for making an illegal U-turn in the 500 block of Easton Road, near East Northwest Highway, according to a copy of the citation.

And most tourists, anglophone or otherwise, do not have children enrolled in the public schools.

And if doofus cop had not cited her for failure to speak English, it is quite likely that charge would not have been dismissed. I don’t see anywhere in the article that the illegal u-turn charge was dropped.

I’m a municipal court judge in one jurisdiction and a prosecutor in another. We routinely dismiss “no DL” citations if the defendant comes in and shows us that he/she had a valid DL on that date, whether it was in the car or not. You got a raw deal, IMHO.

I didn’t get a raw deal. I left my DL at home. I went through a insurance card checkpoint (thank God I had that in the glove box), got a ticket and chose to pay it rather than go to traffic court in Dallas. But thanks for the kind words, Colonel.

By being here in the first place. To immigrate legally, one has to have a basic knowledge of the English language.

The only place I can find the language requirement you speak of is when an immigrant wishes to be naturalized.

That being said, were I to choose to live in another country for any period of time, I would most certainly do my best to learn the language.

Bagaimana kalau kami semua baru berbahasa Inggris saja. Oops. How about if we Americans just speak English.

Where did I say that other countries bar drivers that don’t speak the language?

Well, let me repost it again, dropping an intervening sentence:

If she doesn’t speak English, what happens if she becomes involved in a dangerous traffic situation that necessitates following the orders of a policeman or other public safety worker?...We are the only country on earth that puts the interests of foreigners ahead of the interests of its citizens. "

And to quote what you said in that post about driving without a license -- oops, no need to - there is nothing in that post about driving without a license.

1. She needs to speak English. Her ignorance of English is a danger to herself and others.

2. The ticket for driving without a license was dropped, as well as the "non-English speaker" ticket. No Rule of Law for her. She gets a free pass.

3. We are allowing people to come to our country, legally and illegally, and doing nothing to require their assimilation into our society, one element of which is the English language.

4. By allowing this invasion of non-assimilators, and taxing ourselves to accommodate them, we are putting their interests, that is, the interest of foreigners, ahead of the interest of our own citizens, some of whom are endangered/harmed by these foreigners.

5. There is a significant difference between allowing non-English speaking visitors to our country to drive using international drivers' licenses for a short period of time, and allowing foreigners who come here to live indefinitely, settle in, enroll their children in school, etc, but failing to insist they learn our language and accommodating their ignorance of our laws.

Bagaimana kalau kami semua baru berbahasa Inggris saja. ______ Easy for you to say. ============================== That's Indonesian, just in case you are wondering. Lived there for over 25 years. Every person in Indonesia puts a high priority on learning English. Why can't those who get here, or sneak here (as the case may be), make it as much of a priority to assimilate and learn our language. It doesn't mean that we denigrate their language/culture (or origin), but, if ya come here to America to stay, learn our language, dammit.

Well we can thank the DMVs across the country when they are like Kalifornia who give their driver’s test in about 8 languages. Cop should have cited her for obstructing justice.
