Death of Fla. Girl Found In Landfill A Homicide
By BRENT KALLESTAD ORANGE PARK, Fla. – A body found under trash in a landfill is that of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, a north Florida girl who vanished on her walk home from school, authorities said Thursday.
Clay County Sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino also said the girl's death was a homicide, though she did not elaborate. Justino confirmed the identification hours after Sheriff Rick Breseler said clothing and a birthmark led authorities to believe they had found the missing girl.
An autopsy was being performed Thursday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Savannah after the body was found near the Florida state line.
Detectives spotted the legs first and found the body partially covered by garbage Wednesday in a Georgia landfill, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving the neighborhood where the child disappeared Monday.
Somer's father and other family members were "torn up" after hearing the news, aunt Laura Holt said. She hopes authorities will find her niece's killer.
"I don't think they deserve to live," Holt said. "I don't think there's anything worse that a person can do —to kill a child and dump her in the dump like a piece of trash?"

Both Georgia and fla have the death penalty. If they find the perp he gets death whichever state he did the deed.
Public execution sounds good.
It is astounding how these things can happen in a flash - reminds me of that abduction of the little girl on a sidewalk caught on security cam several years ago.
I just cannot fathom how a person does something like this. How on earth can you look at a beautiful little child and hurt them.
A single bullet to the head and dump them for the bugs to eat.
You can’t even let your kids out to play anymore.
Why, why, why? Why would someone kidnap and murder a child?

I feel sick for this father and his family. I wouldn’t even consider pressing charges on a father who took revenge on a scumbag who murdered his young daughter. I know we have laws that need to be followed but there are certain things that can’t be helped. A lowlife might think twice about harming a young girl if he knew he would have to face the wrath of the enraged father.

Kidnap and sexually assault a child? I have no grasp of why someone would be attracted to a child.
But the murder? Because they know what will happen if the poor victim IDs the creep.
Problem is these guys get out of prison after the first time and continue to prey on the innocent.
Solution? Never let them out or if they get out, send them to something similar to a Leper colony, they can live their lives away from our children so they can never harm another kid.
Kinda close to home for me. When my daughter was about her age (She’s 21 now) her mom presented me with a photo of her and her brother, and said how much she liked this photo.
No only because it was of the two most wonderful kids on earth, but because it showed the birthmark on Darling Daughter’s leg. And that it was good to have a photo of it in case she disappeared.
Little Somer was initially identified by the birthmark on her leg.

Im a newspaper reporter in southern wv. Im currently working on the case of a man who, along with his wife, was a foster parent of over two dozen kids over two decades.
He was indicted in 2007 of 396 counts of sexual assault, sexual abuse and other sexual assault related crimes. He was an equal opportunity molestor. He raped both young girls and young boys and we think he may have impregnated one of them, who later miscarried.
Hes been in jail since 26 july, 2006 and his lawyer is demanding mental health test after mental health test, hoping I suppose to wait out all the witnesses or something. It wont do him any good to plea bargain because no matter if he pleads to one count or 390, hes still going to jail for the rest of his natural life (hes 55 years old).
People tried to warn the state ten years before his arrest but nobody would pay attention. They didn’t want to believe a good church going guy like that could be a pervert, and it might cause them to have to admit they had made a mistake and maybe someone else in their stable of foster fathers was also a child molester.
Basically, a bunch of paper pushers were practicing CYA.

I’ve heard there are many cases like this. The predators seek out positions with access to kids.
Man Poor child I would have to think a while on how to make a long lasting and painful demise to the person who did this.Lethal injection is far and away much too good.
