The Field of Dreams reference did register with me as I think there's some aesthetic similarities between what the 29-31’ fans and current fans are experiencing. From the clutch hitting, to a manager who often relied on gut instinct, to the uncertain the economic times. When I watch this team, it feels so similar to the stories my grandfather used to tell me about watching the 29-31’ Athletics.

One other striking similarity is that both the 29’ Athletics and 2008 Phils used a pitcher (Ehmke-Athletics, Moyer-Phils)who was in their mid 40’s. I mean how often do you see 44 year olds pitching in the World Series!
GO PHILS!!!

Correction: Jack Quinn was the 45 year old pitcher the Athletics used in the 29’ World Series. (Ehmke was a spry 35 years old)

The Jimmy Foxx A’s consistently whooped the Babe Ruth Yankees, until Connie Mack figured he’d rather have the money and sold the team.

How many N.L. pennants have the Phillies won? I think just a few, 1950, 1980 (World Series victory), 1983, 1993, and last year’s World Series victory.

Seven (you left out 1915 and this year)

They may have won the fewest pennants or World Series of any of baseball’s original 16 franchises.

Nope. They are ahead of Cleveland, the White Sox, and Senators/Twins and tied with Pittsburgh and the Browns/Orioles.

Mack had little choice but to sell many of the star players to the White Sox in 1932. Just before the 29’ stock market crash, he borrowed $750,000 to renovate Shibe Park. Saddled with that debt, the highest payroll in baseball and sagging revenue (as a result of the Depression) he was financially broke.

“Field of Dreams” sucked.

How insightful! Thanks.

In fact, the Yankees are the only team that has won more pennants than the Phillies since 1980. And, since 1968 only the Yankees, Reds, A’s and Braves have won as many pennants as the Phillies have.
