Childs Body Found In Search For Missing Girl Somer Thompson disappeared on way home from school on Monday
TODAY staff and wire
Authorities say they have not identified a child's body they found Wednesday in a landfill while searching for a missing 7-year-old girl. Family members were hopeful the girl is still alive, though neighbors in the girl's community feared the worst.
The partially covered body of the child was found in a Georgia landfill near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving from the neighborhood where Somer Thompson disappeared Monday.
Sheriff Rick Beseler said investigators searched through 100 tons of garbage before finding the body. He first said the body was female, then corrected himself to say he could not confirm the gender. NBC affiliate WTLV reported that the body was female.

My the Lord have mercy on us.
Poor baby girl. I feared that would happen. When a pedophile takes a child, they are usually dead within 3 hours. There was another attempted abduction in the same area a week earlier but the girl got away. They should find the bastard that did this and hang him
Hope is the first step on the path to disappointment.
Just assume that your kid is going to die tonight because we are living in the outer circle of hell.
Hope I’m wrong, but from the one news clip of the mother.. there is something not right there.
Just saw that she has been identified as the missing child. This is a very conservative area and woe be to the one who did this because the posse is already out. Hanging will be too easy on this bastard.
Saw this on the news. It just rips your heart out. And makes you want to temporarily waive the “cruel and unusual punishment” clause.
Public hanging for such crimes!
Paging Mr. Lynch; Mr. Charles Lynch; please pick up the red courtesy phone.
You'd be better served praying that you and I never meet in person. Ever.
Is it possible the child was simply hiding in a dumpster for fun and just happened to be in the wrong place?
Well if it were up to me it would be death by firing squad, or throwing his ass in the city dump. There are over 80 sex offenders in the area where Somer lives, absolutely disgusting. They let these animals go, and they take the kids, do whatever they want to do to them, and throw them away like trash. Has she been positively identified because I read they won’t be identifying the remains tonight
What makes you say this?
As I recall from the first stories, she was walking home from school with family and friends, got into a fight, and ran ahead of the rest. Then disappeared.
When I was a kid I regularly walked home from school from an early age. Everyone did. And the kids in our community here in Vermont regularly run around all over town—on the roads, through the fields. They are generally met coming home from school, because the school requires it, but otherwise, they are often out on their own. Which is normal, to me. We lived in Manhattan for a year when I was about six, and I remember going down and roller skating around the block on my own.
Are things worse now than they were? It certainly seems so, even though crime rates are supposedly down.
I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. Police have said that the people they were looking for in connection with the earlier incident came forward when they saw the publicity about Somer Thompson and references to a possible recent abduction attempt in the same area. It appears that was just some people in a car who stopped because they saw a child crying (fell off her bike or something). A second car stopped and apparently misinterpreted what they saw/heard (crying child, adults who clearly weren’t her parents talking to her from a car).
I also think we don’t have enough information to conclude that this couldn’t have been an accident. The child was walking home with her twin brother and 10 year old sister and another child, Somer got into some sort of squabble with the other child, and the older sister yelled at her to stop, and she ran off. Do we really know that she didn’t get lost, scared, and climbed into a dumpster to hide? She was only 7, and children that age often aren’t equipped to respond rationally to danger. She may have either fallen asleep, or simply been too scared to pipe up when the big trash came, or yelled but her little voice couldn’t be heard.
Personally, with the information available right now, I tend to think this is what happened, and that she may even have been carted off very shortly after she disappeared, quite possibly before or just as the search got underway. Otherwise, I think police would have been screening trash trucks leaving the area, and warning trash truck drivers entering the area. Dumpsters are well-known dangers to children (and adults — they found a homeless man killed by a trash compacting truck in Philadelphia today).
I’m sure police will be tracing what trucks made pick ups in the neighborhood, and at what times. It’s just a little too neat that they found her body exactly where they would have expected to find it if she’d stayed in the immediate area and been in a dumpster that was emptied on its regular schedule. Someone trying to hide a body of a child they’d just killed would be more likely to take it out of the immediate area (and probably wait a while too), to make it harder for police to focus on a narrow area and thus be more likely to track down the perp.
Yes, positively by a birthmark.
She was on her way home from school. Kids were walking home at 2:45PM, her brother and sister arrived home at 3:05, that doesn’t give her much time to play around in a dumpster
I didn’t get any negative signals about the Mom. She appeared ragged and heartbroken.
I suggest mechanical castration... then a cell with Bubba!
