The U.S. military can comply with a White House order to clear the Guantanamo Bay prison camp of its prisoners within 10 days, said the prison's commanding officer on Tuesday.
The base commander, Navy Rear Adm. Tom Copeman, told the Miami Herald and Fox News that if the Obama administration ends up calling for the prison's closure by its self-imposed Jan. 22 deadline, the base's staff can comply in a timely matter.
"If they say on Jan. 12, 'move them out,' we can meet the deadline given the proper amount of logistical support,'' he said.
Though he said transporting the prisoners off the base to another facility may pose a bit of a challenge, Copeman said that the main challenge was finding another prison to house the detainees.
The Obama administration has faced many roadblocks in closing the base by January. Congress has said that the White House must provide a concrete plan to close the base before they fund an operation. Several Michigan and Kansas lawmakers also objected to a plan to move the prisoners onto sites in their home states.
Congress on Tuesday completed its passage of a Homeland Security appropriations bill that allows Guantanamo Bay prisoners to stand trial on the U.S. mainland, but did not allow detainees to be permanently held there.
President Barack Obama is expected sign the bill into law.

They’re terrorists, I could clear them out in just a couple of days too. Give me a couple of bulldozers to scrape a ditch and some lime to dust the bodies with.
...but, that wall over there may not be so pretty afterward...
