Democrats once flirted with running Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava for the seat Rep. John McHugh will soon vacate in NY-23, but now that she's a leading contender for the GOP nod, they are rushing to bolster conservative concerns about her alleged tax troubles.
Soon-to-be-former state Democratic Chairwoman June O'Neill today confirmed reports that Scozzafava's husband, an upstate labor leader, talked with key local Democrats and union heads about the possibility of his wife running on Row A if the party's presumed first choice, state Sen. Darrel Aubertine, takes a pass.
"Her husband spoke with several Democratic officials and, you know, people who are aligned with the Democratic Party," O'Neill said. "There was some discussion about whether or not Dede might switch parties, but the whole tax thing is problematic on a number of levels. We didn't want to start out with any problems."
According to O'Neill, this isn't the first time the Democrats have spoken to Scozzafava about switching sides.
The talks started after the GOP passed Scozzafava over in favor of her Assembly colleague, Will Barclay, to run against Aubertine in the 48th SD special election back in February 2008.
The Republicans worried Scozzafava would be seen as too liberal - particularly since she had voted "yes" on gay marriage, while Aubertine, a conservative Democrat, voted "no". Aubertine easily defeated Barclay in that election, and a number of GOP operatives privately conceded after the fact that Scozzafava would have been a better candidate.
I asked O'Neill why Democrats are suddenly willing to speak publicly about the tax issue - more than $192,000 in unpaid state and federal taxes owed by Scozzafava's brother's business, to which the assemblywoman says she now has only the most tenuous of connections.....

Look, that's bulls**t. The lady is a flat liberal running as a Republican. This is a CONSERVATIVE forum. Perhaps you are looking for a Republican forum. Then you can champion liberals with the (R) logo.
Provide a link to the post where I called McDonnell is a RINO.
Around EVERY corner? Scuzzyfava is for gay marriage, for unrestrained abortion, for socialized medicine, for ACORN, for union thuggery. Is there any issue he doesn’t side with the Democrats on?
A little research on Scozzafava might clear your sinuses. She is no friend to conservatives.
Cedric my FRiend I hope you are well and all is good. The “I See A RINO Around Every Corner” group is hard at work tonight. I especially enjoyed their pathetic “RINO” attacks on McDonnell, what a joke.
But, I can't remember your cabal summoning up the fortitude to attack Obama.
I only posted an article...an article that itself did not call Bob McDonnell a RINO or any of its equivalents. Hell, it was an article taken straight from The Washington Times that reported on McCain’s and McDonnell’s quotes from the rally.
However, I **NEVER** said “Bob McDonnell is a RINO” or its equivalent, not in [brackets] or in any other comment.
Try coloring within the lines next time.
No more RINOS!!
Now, I do remember YOUR cabal drawing up hit lists and slandering long-standing FReepers as "trolls."
It’s impossible to slander you.
You’re an idiot.
You silly man. I think that you have been living in a cave. This woman is to the left of Obama and has been wanting to become a Dem for many years. She will once elected - take that to the bank. We will be much better off if the Dem wins, we can contest the seat again in 2010.
You're a tool, Cedric. You and the rest of the RINOpubbie crew on FR. If you want Scozzabama so badly, you can have her!
Next, he (or she) has unfortunate tendencies toward delusions of grandeur, once telling me that he (or she) knew everything and was the smartest person in the world.
Finally, he (or she) generally holds Conservatives in contempt and is a party hack extraordinaire, often insinuating that he (or she) is some kind of high-level GOP insider.
Personally, I think Cedric is first-class nutcase and general nuisance to the forum.
No more reckless RINO labels!
The RINO Brigade escaped from their chicken coops, I see ;-)
Pete Sessions is leading the attack on the conservative in this race and endorsed the Liberal candidate. John Cornyn voted for the stimulas did he not? Favored amnesty. Lately he’s trying to cut conservatives off in the knees by recruiting Liberals like Crist to run for office. Brownback? Amnesty. Jeb Bush? Amnesty. Judd Gregg? OMG are you serious? You think he’s a conservative? LOL His state was turning to the Democrat’s and lacking any core principle he started trending there himself.
I don’t think you get it. This is a conservative site. When Republicans advance positions that are not conservative they will be called out. These days it is more frequent. I’ll admit that. I’ll admit when they make a wrong move my reaction is to question their allegiance and whether we have another potential traitor on our hands. Too many Republicans have betrayed us too many time’s that I expect it. Like the partner who has multiple affairs then the one time he/she doesn’t and swears it’s not true...it’s too late.
They put themselves in this mess.
When they make the fatal mistake of endorsing a position that is only not conservative but is one the base considers a litmus test you will always struggle to regain trust.
None of the Republicans have a perfect track record. But there are things as a Republican if you want conservative approval you just do not do. And Ms. Dede here breaks every single one.
