VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, headlined a packed veterans rally for Virginia's Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell on a cold, rainy Saturday morning.

About 300 supporters crammed into a Veterans of Foreign Wars post that had been decorated with massive red, white and blue "Veterans for McDonnell" signs.

"This is the man who will bring about fiscal discipline, who understands what it means to balance a budget, who understands what pork barrel spending is, who understands that we have an obligation not just to our present citizens and out present veterans but to our children and our grandchildren and not hand them an unsustainable debt," McCain said. "That's Bob McDonnell. He will be a fiscal conservative."

A Navy veteran, McCain was once based at nearby Naval Air Station Oceana. He told funny stories about his military career and said the nation needs a new direction.

"My friends, there's something going on out there in America," McCain said. "It's anger and it's frustration. They're sick and tired of the corruption in Washington. They're sick and tired of the earmark and pork barrel spending."

McDonnell smiled broadly when McCain called him "Governor McDonnell," and later told the audience that McCain "would have made an outstanding president of the United States of America."

If McDonnell wants to hang out with RINOs like McCain, Huckabee, and Romney, he shouldn't be surprised when folks start getting suspicious of McDonnell himself.

No, McDonnell hasn’t impressed me ever since he ran from his own words that WAPO published. You either believed them or you didn’t. If he did he was willing to sacrifice them rather than lose the election. If he didn’t, then he does only what is expected to get by to reach his goal.

WAPO is not excused for what they did. But McDonnell clarfied what kind of man he was during that process. I do want him to win, but not because I’m impressed with him or want to build the GOP. I want to build conservatives and I don’t see him as a principled one. No, I want him to win to frighten the tails of the “blue dogs” in Congress. That’s the only reason. Same with in N.J.

I hope the folks in AZ aren’t fooled by McCain’s sudden support for conservative values. He’s only trying to woo conservatives to vote for him in 2010. If he’s re-elected (shudder!!), he will revert to the slimy side like his light in the loafers best buddy Graham.

Are you talking about what he wrote many years ago in regard to women working?

He could hardly “stand by” those words if in subsequent years his perspective and his actions literally changed. As I understand it his wife works and so do all of his daughters. And he’s ok with what they have done and are doing.

You know rabs, the only one I'm suspicious of here is YOU. For some reason you've got this burr up your butt and are trying to drag down Bob McDonnell.

I'll say it once again, this is a watershed election. And YOU KNOW Bob McDonnell is no RINO. If you don't pull the middle ground vote, you'll never win and Republicans, and Conservatives along with them will be the minority party for decades, not just a few cycles. It's just that simple.

Would I have preferred that McCain not campaign with McDonnell? Probably.

But I understand here that the bigger picture is keeping Creigh Deeds and the other minions of Barack Obama out of office.

It's time you either grasp that vision, or take a two-week vacation.

But isn't your complaint with McDonnell that he is too religious for you? If not, I apologize, but in other threads you suggested that, for example, Palin may be staying away from Virginia because of she read McDonnell's thesis.

If so, while that's a legitimate reason not to vote for a strong conservative Catholic, it would be a different objection than that being voiced here.
