Huckabee and Hoffman (Huck, Romney decline to support conservative candidate)
American Spectator ^ | 10-15-09

Posted on 10/17/2009 1:43:54 PM PDT by ellery

Fox News host, garage band cover guitarist, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will be making a long-planned speech before the New York Conservative Party in Syracuse, New York on October 28, but has thus far declined to say whether he will formally endorse or financially support Conservative Party House candidate Doug Hoffman, who is running to fill former Rep. John McHugh's 23rd Congressional District seat.

Most Republican Party leaders have thus far taken a pass in endorsing Hoffman, who has the support of the conservative Club for Growth, as well as the American Conservative Union. House minority leader John Boehner and his right hand man, Rep. Eric Cantor have refused to get in the middle of the race, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have also declined to support Hoffman.

Huckabee had agreed to attend the dinner for the state party in upstate New York some time ago and is looking forward to using his speech to draw attention to Hoffman, according to a longtime Huckabee aide. But Huckabee has not decided whether to fully endorse Hoffman or just "say some nice things about him to boost his candidacy," says the source, adding, when asked how far Huckabee might go to support the conservative in the race, "We probably won't be going so far as to let him tap into our national fundraising network, if that's what you mean."

I suppose technically and eventually, Huck may pay lip service to the conservative candidate, but according to this article, his people say he won’t give Hoffman access to his fundraising networks. Meanwhile Romney has declined to support him altogether.

IMO, both Romney and Huck are sniveling opportunists who care only about returning to power hand-in-hand with the establishment GOP—regardless of the consequences for conservatism and the country.

“conservative Club for Growth”

sounds like another corporate front trying to hijack conservatives.

I’m guessing Huck will support Hoffman. He’s supporting Rubio over the worthless Charlie Loafers

If ever there was a time for Sarah Palin to swoop in, it is now.

nature abhors a vacuum and we have a vacuum in conservatism.

Meanwhile, R.S. McCain has a short blurb about the race on his website -- Conservative Doug Hoffman slams Scozzafava in guest-blog at Malkin -- which has this:
Trust me: Very Important People might make this The Mother Of All Showdowns with the RINO sellouts in the GOP Establishment. Lipstick, baby.
Wonder if he knows something about the 'Cuda's intentions in this race? He's buds with Lynn Vincent, Palin's book collaborator.

Background: In a nutshell, the GOP candidate in this race is essentially an ACORN democrat. So in desperation, the NY Conservative Party has fielded Doug Hoffman, a third-party conservative candidate.

Hoffman looks like he actually has a shot at winning. Fred Thompson, the Club for Growth and the American Conservative Union have endorsed him.

On the other hand, Romney has refused to back Hoffman, and Huck may pay only lip service. Newt has endorsed the ACORN democrat running as a republican, and the RNC has sent her a bunch of money.

This race appears to be an important litmus test for all GOP candidates and power players.

At least Club for Growth is actually supporting the conservative candidate in this race — unlike the RNC, Romney, Gingrich, et al.

House minority leader John Boehner and his right hand man, Rep. Eric Cantor have refused to get in the middle of the race, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have also declined to support Hoffman.

Newt endorsed Scuzzy. I think Boehner donated to Scuzzy.

So I think some parts of this is inaccurate

Hoffman is the only conservative in the race

Didn’t I hear that Gingrich supported the liberal GOP candidate as well?

We’ll see. According to this article, Huck may voice some support, but refuse to back it up with fundraising. If that happens, I will see it as Huck trying to have it both ways.

Didn’t Newt just endorse Scuzzy yesterday? This article was written the day before. I think it’s not inaccurate—leopards have just shown even more of their spots since it was written.

Agreed. This may be just one race, but for me it’s a weathervane. I hope Palin jumps in.

I sure hope that happens. If Hoffman wins against these craven GOP establishment donkeys, it might put a well-needed scare into the whole GOP establishment.
