California considering banning giant TVs Electricity-guzzling giant-screen televisions are on the verge of being banned in California in an attempt to cut the state's soaring energy bill.

By Tom Leonard in New York Published: 8:38PM BST 16 Oct 2009

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the state's governor, has supported controversial proposals by the California's energy commission to impose strict energy consumption limits on TVs with screens that are more than 40 inches wide.

The commission claims that California's estimated 35 million televisions and related gadgets account for about 10 per cent of household energy consumption in the state.

Experts say that the large LCD or plasma screen sets can use three times as much power as traditional models.

Some TV manufacturers are fighting the plan but have reportedly said little to sway the commission, which could vote on it within weeks.

Their constituents all have 50 inch and bigger! Mostly paid for with gov money (hand-outs) They’re messin’ with their base now.

My Dad told me years ago that there wouldn't be another revolution until the government tried to outlaw a man's TV, his cigarettes, and his beer.

Yep. We’ll just keep running the existing fleet until it wears out. Then we’ll freeze in the dark.

I would be willing to bet that every politician in CA has big screen TV. I do, and if my governor tried to do something as stupid as this I would personally go to Santa Fe and wring his liberal neck. THAT’S what you California folks ought to do to Ahnold! He’s sure let his liberal side shine through!

I have no idea why any conservative would remain in the state of CA. I know it’s a beautiful state, and they might have family there, but. . .

Kalifornia will wind up banning EVERYTHING but perversity and Mexicans stealing taxpayer money.

Yet Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, even while promoting legislation to reduce carbon emissions, produces the largest individual carbon footprint in California by commuting back and forth daily in a private jet between his residence in the Los Angeles area and his office in Sacramento.

This would save me $2.50 per month on my energy bill? Well, I’d rather pay that $2.50 to have a screen I can actually see with these old eyes!

EVERYTHING but perversity

And as long as degeneracy and perversity are still AOK, the drones out there will still consider themselves "free".

That said, I live in Sweden and nearly everyone here has a giant TV. What's that tell you? Sweden is less totalitarian than California.

“Joy Behar in high-def”

I’m convinced she’s Koko the gorilla, shaved. Remember, the one that could `sign’?
I have documented proof—photos, court papers from Smoking Gun and, well, everything!

If the public is paying their electric bill and taxes on electric usage what business is it of the government.

Oh wait! That is Kalifornia!

Next they will be looking in your windows to see if you have a big tv. Sounds like the Iranians looking for satelite dishes.
It really means that CARB can ban anything they set their mind to. Unlegislated laws and rules and fines.

Silly liberals. In a normal, profit-oriented, economy, the electric company would have welcomed the opportunity to sell more juice.

Silly deniers of silly liberal policies. Once Big TVs are banned, then it is only a matter of time before air conditioners that are too cold are banned, and then heaters that are too warm. Next, Kali energy nannys will ban cake mixes that require the oven to be hotter than “too much” and “wasteful”. Then beer that is too cold will also be banned.

To anyone who loves their liberty: escape while you can.

This will have a couple of obvious effects if enacted:

TV sales in California will slow and Best Buy and Fry's will lay off a few hundred people.

Big Screen TV ads on Craig's List will skyrocket.

Nevada and Arizona will see a surprising uptick in big screen TV sales.

We Californians will pay more, get less but still enjoy our big screen TVs - for awhile.

But then ...

Obama will decide to send 40,000 HDTV Inspection Core Troops to California to survey HDTV screen sizes based on a recommendation from Homeland Security General McCracker. Obama thought long and hard about his decision but finally gave the go-head 15 seconds after receiving the recommendation.

Congress will pass the Cash for HDTV-Clunkers program and it will be wildly successful. 4 million 40+ inch HDTVs will be destroyed in a manner of a few weeks. How green is my valley.
