geocities was an awful idea. it offered a free web page to anyone, but it couldn’t be hotlinked. it gave an impression of legitimacy to any source, so your geo page about the 17th Missippi Regiment appeared in searches right next to the page by some pothead that spent his whole life in Hawaii. and whaddaya know, yahoo! will shut down the geocities service this october.
geo was a classic dot-con. it never made a profit, was sold in a deluded stock market that wanted to believe that everything ‘tech’ was solid gold, and proved itself a loss of three and a half billion dollars.
