when the balloon landed, I thought at the time the emergency personnel seemed rather lackadaisical for a life and death situation. My guess is that they had already been informed there was no one in the balloon. Meaning that the news media knew also, and was just hyping the drama.
When the men closed in, I thought the balloon looked about 1/6th of the size I had pictured. I had a feeling like when I saw the frozen bigfoot at that press conference...

Would truck ambulance drivers have followed that balloon for a couple of hours and then raced out into that field if they had known that the balloon was unoccupied? I find that difficult to believe. Also, would news anchors willingly go along with such a fraud? The risk to their reputations would be so enormous that I doubt that, too.
