California Math Scores Among The Lowest

SAN FRANCISCO -- Thank goodness for Mississippi and Alabama.
If not for the two southern states, California students would be at the bottom of the national heap in mathematics, according to the 2009 Nation's Report Card released Wednesday.
The abysmal standing, which reflects in part the state's diverse population, hasn't changed much over the years. California consistently has ranked among the lowest-scoring states in the biennial National Assessment of Educational Progress, a federally mandated assessment of a sampling of fourth- and eighth-graders across the country.
On the plus side, state students have made steady progress over the years, generally keeping pace with their national counterparts - albeit from the back of the pack.
California's fourth-graders outscored their peers in only the two southern states and the District of Columbia, and tied five states. Eighth-graders outscored only Mississippi and the District of Columbia, and tied four states.
Overall, California students performed at or below the national average regardless of income or ethnicity.
"We have nothing to celebrate. It is not a high ranking we are holding on to," said Linda Murray, acting executive director for The Education Trust-West, an Oakland nonprofit focused on closing the achievement gap, in a statement. "The 2009 NAEP results in math are more boulders thrown on top of a mountain of data that scream at us to pay attention."

The failure of liberal methods and means. Perhaps that liberal math is related to why they are or were nearly $22-26 billion deficit?
Yet ANOTHER example of a “liberal utopia” which is a nightmare. Liberals have to work hard not to see the truth.
The schools and the teachers are just secondary factors. It's difficult to teach cats how to bark.
The real problem is they need more money for better education and smaller classes. /sarcasm
"Conservatives" for more Federal Spending.
The predictable outcome of “touchy-feely” math. “How do you FEEL about that answer?” Never mind that it’s totally wrong. An average 5th grader 100 years ago could do more math than most present-day high school seniors.
Just like the USSR, we will have food shortages and no medicine in the USA...and the elites will party in the gated mansions...
In the 1960s California had the highest ranked schools k-12, in the country.
HS required 4 years of English, so you had to attend for 4 years.
The max GPA was 4.0, not 5.0.
Non-English language kids just did the best they could in English. I still know some from elementary school, and they have no detectable accent as adults.
If you disrupted a class, the teacher would call for the Vice Principal who would give you swats.
We teachers dreaded getting transfer students from CA. They usually were at least 1 1/2 grade levels behind.
That explains the state budget troubles!
sad but im afraid most of our other schools are the same
Hmphf. I would rather live in Mississippi or Alabama over California any day.
(Apologies to my Christian brethren and conservatives in Ca.)
“diverse population” They can’t admit the state has been polluted by illegal Mexicans with little cultural inclination to education.
Alabama's state motto: At least were not Mississippi.
Yep....The people in the southwest tried to warn states like Mississippi and Alabama what was coming...Few listened.
When you think that, scholastically, the US is at the bottom of the heap worldwide, California must be REALLY bad. It’s not stopping there. This is the next 3rd world country. Education only enough to show up and vote for more government subsidy. So sad, though. At what point will the teachers realize that marxist doctrine puts the entire country in the ditch?
