What Would TR Do?

Writing in the NYR Blog, Jonathan Freedland notes that Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded by a committee of five liberal politicians from a country whose population is half the size of London, reflecting a “Norwegian consensus” that “favors multilateralism, yearns for nuclear disarmament, and believes in international institutions, revering the United Nations above all.” The speculation in Oslo is that what clinched the award for Obama was chairing a UN meeting and “using that body as the vehicle for his disarmament ambitions.” READ THE REST AT COMMENTARYMAGAZINE.COM

As a boy, I enamored of TR, at least as far as my capacity to admire politicians allowed. He was pure act, exciting, and seemingly unafraid to say what he meant. I read Edmund Morris’ “The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt” and enjoyed the ride. Then I read “Theodore Rex,” and the more I learned the less I liked. Is this what I once admired? Strident nationalism and militarism. Jealous protection of central power at the expense of private power masquerading as Public Service shielding the poor people from Big Business and the Robber Barons. Gobbling up all he could for the federal government lest it go to waste, culminating in “America’s best idea,” that is, the national parks system, otherwise known as the empty places no one cares about in the middle of vast swaths of wild land either ignored or kept up by private enterprise. Blech.

It is obvious: Hussein Obama GOT the award because he was America’s first BLACK President.

Peace happens when you pledge your life, your fortune and sacred honor to the protection of your neighbor’s inalienable rights- among these are LIFE, and the right to the fruit of your own labor.

TR's political years are an approximation for the beginning of the end of the Republic.

Better that none of the R's ever existed....
