FCC Commissioner Says Diversity Chief’s Ideas for Regulating Free Speech Are ‘Troubling’

Federal Communications Commissioner Robert McDowell said Tuesday that statements about regulating freedom of speech in broadcasting made by FCC Chief Diversity Officer Mark Lloyd are troubling. Everyone should be concerned when federal regulators have the power to impact freedom of speech, McDowell added.
In his 2006 book Prologue to a Farce: Communication and Democracy in America, Lloyd wrote that public broadcasting outlets should be funded at a level commensurate with or above those spending levels at which commercial operations are funded.
He said that the funds do so should come from license fees charged to commercial broadcasters--the same commercial broadcasters" that would have to compete with these public broadcasting outlets.
Concerns that such policies might negatively impact the First Amendment right to freedom of speech were exaggerations, said Lloyd, who also wrote that such protestations were evidence that the First Amendment had become warped to serve unnamed global corporations.
It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press, Lloyd wrote. This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.

So as we go forward with our media ownership and localism proceedings next year, I think everyone should watch very carefully what the FCC attempts to do.
Heads uo on this one folks.

Believe it or not, he just got reappointed by the B-HO on June 25, 2009 (under the statutes that govern the FCC, each political party gets at least two of the five seats on the FCC, and McDowell was at one time a protege of Ted Stevens, who was at various times the Chairman or the ranking member on the Senate Commerce Committee). FCC Commissioners serve 5 year terms, so he is set to serve through June, 2014.
The other GOP Commissioner, who was just appointed, is a lady named Meredith Attwell Baker.

Exactly! This guy hates the free market of ideas. Conservatives dominate Talk Radio because they listen and participate. There is nothing stopping liberals from getting into Talk Radio except nobody listens to them. Let's see they tried Mario Cumo, Alan Dershowitz, Ed Shultz, Stephanie Miller and a host of other losers and malcontents. Nobody wanted to listen. They even had their own station called Air America. Nobody listened so the advertisers didn't want to pony up money. It was a failure.
There are few barriers today to getting into Radio. There are many frequencies available and the cost barrier simply isn't there any longer. But you cannot create listeners out of thin air if they don't exist. Diversity? Minority? Maybe Mark Lloyd should go over to the FM Band. There he will hear an infinity of Hip Hop Crap listened to by minorities galore. This is what they are tuned into and Mark Lloyd cannot change that.
This creep Mark Lloyd's sole purpose at FCC is to destroy conservative Talk Radio. Make no mistake about it. There's no other reason for him to be there. This guy is a fraud. He's a phony and everyone should be able to see through him.
