BUYER TIED TO FOUNDATION WITH BIG MONEY IN, NO MONEY OUT Ranking Member on the House Vets' Committee doesn't comment on foundation that shares his offices and was headed by his daughter.
Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN), Ranking Member on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, finds himself in the middle of an interesting controversy.
But, he has had a colorful history during his stay in Congress ... most notably for ousting Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) from the House Vets' Committee Chair in 2005.
A nonprofit foundation associated with Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Monticello, has been quietly collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for the primary purpose of helping students pay for college.
But the foundation, which enjoys tax-exempt status, has yet to award its first scholarship after six years in existence.
"It's not Congressman Buyer's foundation," press secretary Anjulen Anderson said.
Buyer has several indirect connections, however. The foundation shares an office with his district office in Monticello, or at least did as of June 8, 2009, when it filed its most recent IRS Form 990 tax report. The Form 990 is an annual report certain federally tax-exempt organizations must file.
Ed Sagebiel, Lilly spokesman, explained what happened.
"We have provided funding to Congressman Buyer's foundation. We believed it to be a worthy cause," he said.

It would be interesting to hear from IN FReepers.
This veteran has not had an affair in a long time!
Looks like a possibly corrupt GOPer.
Not quite sure what it has to do with the VA, but he should definately be investigated.
Republican, Democrat, whatever....go after the SOB’s.
What a load of hogwash. He got $12,000 a year, wonder what his daughter’s salary was when she was head of the outfit.
This makes me sick. We need to get rid of ALL the dirty, greedy, sorry sacks of crapola.
A lot of charities waste terrible amounts of money on travel, board meetings, marketing, etc. The worst are ther charities that are essentially lobbyist shops wrapped in a special IRS reg. I do not donate unless I know the charity well or donating b/c a family member feels passionately about something and asks me to contribute.
The irs form 990s do not provide good enough transparency.
People who appeal to someone’s patriotism to raise money and then waste that money are bad people. I would like to fully understand what this congressman’s role in the org was.
This smells bad.
The Indpls Star is doing a full court press, with front page headline coverage.
The unfortunate part is, the Dem that runs against him every two years is real poison, a Baraqqi Harvard law school guy.
Back in ‘87 I served with Buyer in the Reserves. We were part of the 21st SupCom. He was the JAG officer back then. He was a prick RINO then and he is still a prick RINO now.
We really need to run a constitutionist conservative against him in the primaries and beat this hypocrite. He has fooled too many people for too long.
Despite the fact that the wheels of Justice roll slow, it looks like his karma is about to catch up with him.
